  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey Raphael,

Good job.

Overcranking is a tough one as you need to ensure that your content is soooooo interesting it warrants the extended time to view it.

Though possibly overused, you may have been better to speed all the normal skate stuff to real motion rate and ramped the cool bits into slomo to exaggerate the effect while reducing the clip duration substantially.

Also, I would have liked to see some closeups, the whole thing stayed pretty wide.

Good footage, I do love the slow Mo, effect alway up to 300-500fps on people, anything over that just as FX, explosion, water splashes and anything of interest if such frame speed.

I have been testing various speed for violent fight scenes, acts of rape, and crying, they all bring incredible drama and attention to the scene, but only if they are consequently and alternatively intercut with regular speed played frames and even some very fast frames shot at 6-10fps, this creates extremely interesting Ramping effects that changes the story entirely.

In your footage I would definitely think this would have greatly improved the viewing experience giving it so much more interesting look.

This off course are my opinions as to what and how I like to film, we each have our own style of shooting and directing, so please take this as a comment, since you asked for, and not by any mean a critic of your work.

Nice clean footage, I like your color grade. However, just because you can shoot 120fps, doesn't always mean you should. Agree on ramping, try using twixtor to get the clip to real time speed, then ramp down to native slomo for the "keeper" part of the shot. Just my opinion.

Actually it was a test.
A friend just bought a Cammate and we take our R1 with a 10mm T 2.1 and shoot a skate park near the office.
As you said Ketch thats why we film...practice and learning.

I like it but as Charles says Id like to see some longer shots like the one where the camera is near the ground and the skater is closing in on the camera grinding around the top. At 0:17 is the clip I'd like to see and go past the camera
 
For me I have to disagree on the speed ramping, I don't need it in this video. But this is just a personal taste. I have seen many videos with ramp effect, with cool fast edit cuts, and even though it emphasizes the movement and "fastness" of the motion in skate boarding, I liked to see a different approach in this video, where the whole thing slows down and with the slow pace of the song, it becomes something else, like slow dancing.

I agree also with some of the other people, that the piece could benefit from a different cut, sometimes using longer takes and I am definitively missing some close ups of the people. The shots where they get really close to the camera are very nice. Though I also like the continuity in the editing from some cuts, that feel you had a bunch of jibs.

I enjoyed it. Keep them coming and thanks for posting.

PS: I am a frustrated skate boarder, that in my childhood even though I loved skating so much I was so bad I never had the guts to jump on the U. I think if you google in wikipedia I will appear as the worst skate boarder in the history. So I could be watching skate boarding for hours, whether is 120fps, 1 or 2000fps.. :-)
