  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

good tripod for RED set

For the weight you're talking about, I'd opt for 2060 or Sachtler 9x9. I own a Miller 55 and love the head for its movement and mobility. It's perfect for indies, run and gun and doc footage. It gets some of the smoothest moves for a head that small. I actually like it better than anything bar O'Connor and the bigger Sachtlers (9x9's). If you plan to rent it heavily than I'd opt for Sachtler - just a more solid build (not nuts about the movement though).

I rarely use it over 40lbs though. For bigger rigs (Zooms), I usually go for 2060.

One thing to keep in mind is that even though the load says 55lbs, if you have a lot of top mounted accessories and zooms, it produces more leverage and that 55lbs rating more realistically is 40 plus. RED is a top heavy rig compared to many other cameras.

Somebody very experienced and famous in a field told me that nobody can beat Ronford-Baker with any of fluid-head-tripod "configurations" EVER!!!

Then I've simply decided and have got one and it was used model from 2004 series like this one below:

I went for used Ronford-Baker SERIES 2000 FLUID HEADS WITH BALANCE CONTROL MODEL 2004.

"Incorporates the will proven Ronford-Baker fluid system operated by a single fluid system control lever with four progressive positions both pan and tilt.
The tilt operation is backed up by a balance control system with an "off" position and seven progressive settings operated by a single control lever,
giving an unprecedented smoothness and accuracy of control and balance under all situations."

I've got a 2060 mitchell mount with Sachtler 150mm carbon sticks. Love it, but now I'm ready for a 2575 with Ronford standards and baby plus a Sacthler 20 with CF sticks. For the past 12 months my jobs have either been a little too big for the 2060 or the 2060 is too heavy for the run and gun gigs.

I dont recommend anything less than a 2060.
I own a 1030s.. dont even think about that if you plan on using red primes...

I rented a 2575 this past week, and Its amazing how much of a difference it makes

Any plans to sell your 2060, then?

Do you think the arrow 55 with heavy duty carbon legs could carry a red with the RPP? It's payload is 55lbs.
