Was wondering what you guys think would be the better processor for editing? 2 x Quad Core Intel Xeon E5520 Nehalem 2.26GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache or Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz 1MB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache - 4 Cores In CPU ?

I'm assuming you're talking about building your own PC? I'd wait- camera isn't even out yet. It's the software that's as important- what editing program are you planning to use? On PC I'd go Adobe. So check with Adobe which of those processors would do more.

Unfortunately I need the system soon to complete a project done on another camera. I am using Premiere Pro. The systems I'm pricing out with those two different processors are within a couple hundred dollars of one another. Trying to determine which would actually edit faster. I can get the eight core with the same clock speed, but that's way more expensive. Will post to Adobe too as recommended.

It really does depend on your editing program/post-processing workflow. If you're using adobe, I'd shoot an email to their service department and ask how many threads that Premiere/After Effects can effectively utilize. If it can use more than say 5 or 6 then the dual xeon is the way to go, but if it's 4 or less then the core i7 will be much more cost effective.

I always say get the most power you can afford. There's no such thing as your last computer or too much power. Buying faster now means your machine lasts a little longer before you need to replace it.

You need the Xeons if you want a 2P system. If you have the money, go with those E5520s. They're the best value in the lot.

It's a guaranteed pain in the butt, but... if you're both cheap enough and geek enough, you can put together a rockin i7 system (running OS X) for around $1000. I am using such a system now. It does far more than check Red.com, and it does it with great aplomb. Gotta love aplomb. Kicks the pants off my old dual-core Powermac 2.66 at work.

If you would rather lose your hair than your money, do searches on osx86 or iDeneb. There is a huge support base. It works. Spend your time under the hood, save your money for ramen noodles and lenses. I know it's not right for most people, but it's the best solution for me.
