  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet will be here...when ?

last known release dates are what's on the brochure on the red site, plus "a month or two"... Anyone who says different other than RED is likely just speculating.

later,
Jason

Well I'm down with 2010,Jim said that they won't let a full public release happen till after a couple builds of the camera being done with a small group.which fair enough might be happening as we speak but it's on the izzy thread if you want to see.sounds like a 2010 early-mid release...
Although Offhollywood did point out that they were going to be staying for the whole convention that's happening from 11-15th or something like that.also sounded like expressing great interest in RED for the reason of staying so dates are all over the place.I'd say wait till the 11th of Sept before anything slightly solid appears...

I'm with Jason -- everyone keeps coming up with these wild release dates, based on nothing. Who said mid-2010? The site says late summer 2009 for the first Scarlet models. There is absolutely no reason to believe that RED is nearly ONE YEAR behind their schedule, without telling anyone. Do I think they are probably 3-4 months behind? Sure. But a year? No.

depends where "here" is! if by here you mean Jim's lab, then i believe it is here!

I'm purely speculating here, I hope Jim proves me wrong, but... Since Jim is an old-school retail-savvy manufacturer, and since he has said that the current economic climate is not a good time to release anything, and the fact that he has scaled back overtime for Red team, thus easing the urgency on his staff, I would expect to see Scarlet no earlier that December 1st, 2009. I would also expect to see the fixed lens Scarlet first. I would expect that the fixed lens Scarlet will enjoy a full six-months of unfettered, joyous popularity with inventories sufficient to provide at-once purchase in the Red online store, before any additional models are released. I also expect to see a re-alignment of models & features to be announced along with Scarlet's release.

Why do I think this? I believe Red has the technology down pat. I believe that they are also encountering some minor obstacles to integrating features. They have insinuated as much. These delays are normal, they are minor and they should be encouraging signs that Red is first and foremost a development company and a manufacturer second. This ensures that Red will maintain a huge advantage over their competitors in development, which is the key to making market-relevant products for imaging.

The area of difficulty, I believe, is managing growth. Red has much legacy experience in fulfillment of orders derived mostly from Oakley. However, they have to integrate an effective tech support division into their operations and manage new product manufacturing at factories world-wide. This is not particularly difficult given Jim's long experience, but it can be taxing. But Red has proven with the release of Red One that they are up to the challenge.

Adding not only a new product, but a new category, the 2/3" sensor family, can create logistical issues that a relatively slow yet well-managed roll-out is needed to solve. Thousands of Scarlets will hit the street soon and some of them will have tech-support issues. Despite Red's best efforts and the best QC programs in place, the simple fact is some small fraction of delivered units will need some TLC. Its my opinion that the fixed lens Scarlet will be the test-bed for a new, greatly expanded support effort that is being formed now and will undergo much change and re-calibration during Scarlet's moment alone in the spotlight.

Scarlet has the potential to be a huge cash cow, but only if its done right. As End-Users, we all want this launch to go smoothly, because we can all see the upside for both Red and all of us is equally huge. So, this is where I think we are in terms of release dates. The economy is certainly a factor, the operational challenges are certainly a factor, and ensuring a successful roll-out using time-tested methods is a factor. That's my two cents, not that anyone asked, but I'm confident Red will not pull the trigger until the support apparatus is in place and functioning well.

As a future Scarlet owner, I would be quite happy if events unfolded just like this and I had my brilliant little fixed lens Scarlet that functioned properly and a support team that I could depend on.

<<< Waiting with cash in hand.

Cheers guys!

i think company names are fine in place of full names, but ah well let the mods sort it...
As for scarlet...

You can't expect them to release a new brochure every time the dates change can you? Honestly if that was the case and then we'd end up like 20 brochures all saying the same thing,

Jim's stated that now won't be the right to to release the cameras and further more that they would go throw small group testings before a full release, so yes you are potentially correct on the point that we may see the cameras end of summer but due to the fact that those small group testings won't start till after they are done with their own workings means a little later then summer,

Obviously all speculation but evidence was from the boss man himself.

Anyway what matters is that we all keep saving... :)
