I did a search first, but found nothing. I do have a faint recollection of MAYBE seeing something about these guys around here. In any case, I just had a great conversation with a family friend who works for:

www.isilon.com

I've done few demonstration with them in Tokyo. I used R3D contents from Isilon to edit.
Isilon is aware of RED ONE.

Isilon builds clustered storage systems.
Compared to high-speed storage networks (SANs) which in a proper configuration guarantee a certain bandwidth, clustered storage primary advantage is in multi-user simultaneous access in large quantities. Say youtube or Wiredrive.
If you are talking about multiple HD streams uncompressed, 2K or even 4K work, clustered storage is not a suitable backbone.

According to to our family friend, that is not the case. Isilon systems are used by a number of the studios...

well ... might not be "affordable" for many - but certainly "suitable". Clustered storage scales very nicely. DataDirect has a great clustered solution as well used by many for multiple 2K streams. We looked closely at DataDirect & Isilon but opted for 8G Fibre SAS raids.

I agree to Mark, although my experience was to establish a demo scheme for Isilon Japan, it was working nicely especially with R3D (after they came out with the 10Gbit connection), but yes, the cost is not really suitable for normal production companies, I myself is working on to setup Rorkedata Galaxy Aurora LS right now.

Kaku, will be nice if you can let us know your experience with the Rorkedata - Lim

Did you go with the "Apple" Promise set-up?

Rorke says MSRP is 70 cents/gb which seems much cheaper than Promise. Is that true?

Anyone look at Facilis Terrablock?

Be careful defining clustered storage, no isilon can't handle HD but that's mostly due to their reliance on GbE... for the price tag they shoud be in 10 GbE.

They do have 10bE version, that is what I demonstrated last year.

But of course the price gets significantly higher.

Lim,

We ended up ordering Small Tree's GraniteStor with 10Gb ethernet connections. The configuration only allows x2 10Gb connections but provides x12 1Gb connections which actually promises full HD PreRes editing. While 10Gb connections allow uncompressed HD editing, the 1Gb connections are optimized to provide flawless HD Prores editing, so I'd assume it will provide enough performance for R3D handling. This could provide fast enough performance for editing full HD Prores and R3D editing on new iMac.

I'll let you know how this goes.
