I've got a 1972 Mercedes 280 SE (W116). No crackles, no groans but an insane fuel consumption; brilliant cars in their time and even today an archetype of craftsmanship. My wive's BMW 730d died with 250,000 km on the speedo by a worn-out torque-converter. There was only a minor repair of the AC in the last 200.000 km. Brilliant car. It now has a new life in Russia. The new Volvo XC90 (the kids, you know...) seems to be a good replacemant. We've got the diesel model and I'm pleased with the fuel consuption to performance ratio.
I agree that Mercedes-Benz nowadays isn't Mercedes-Benz as it used to be. The company's efforts to become a major global player killed the brand and it's biggest asset: reliability. Sorry to see this. Apparently Porsche is going the same route. They expanded too fast, tried to swallow VW (!) and now get eaten by the primary victim. Porsche is now VW. A pity.
