The latest version of the RED FINAL CUT STUDIO INSTALLER (v20.0.0) has been posted on www.red.com/support .

SUMMARY: Provides native REDCODE media (R3D) support for Final Cut Pro and Color. Includes: RED QuickTime Codec (v3.7.0), Log and Transfer (v2.0.0), REDCODE plugin for Color (v3.0), and Final Cut Studio RED workflow whitepaper.

Note: Supports RED ONE cameras up through Build 20.

Thanks, BC

Great.... (That Was Quick)

Cool... More toys to play with! I get my I get my FCS3 upgrade tomorrow.

I like how we can pull in looks from RED Alert. L&T can leave the files as native or transcode right to 2K ProRes 444 (or any other ProRes or supported codec).

Does this new final cut installer add support for the new Color Science? I want to assume so, given it also has a v20.x.x version number.

Reading the white paper the things that caught my eye were:

"Important — The 16:9 aspect ratios have not been tested extensively with Color. If you
plan on using this resolution, you should do your own workflow tests before committing
to shooting your project at this resolution. "

"Turn Off the Cameraʼs MAX Setting Before You Shoot
Thereʼs a checkbox labeled MAX In the PROJECT submenu of the SYSTEM menu of
the RED ONE camera. If youʼre planning on finishing your project using Final Cut Pro
and Color, itʼs best to turn this setting off before you begin shooting. Leaving it on may
adversely affect real-time performance of RED media in Final Cut Studio. "

The max thing was news to me.

From the Build 20 ops guide.

Note: Leave MAX box checked, unless recording 4K 16:9 and needing real time decode.

Also, from the release notes:

Note: Enable MAX for maximum image quality, disable MAX for faster decode times for 4K footage.

I usually shoot 4KHD and edit in Final Cut / Color. So MAX box should be... umm... unchecked?

From Stuart:

We have discussed before I'm sure. MAX does just what it suggests, provides maximum image quality.

So why would you choose not to use MAX all the time ?

One reason is if you are shooting a TV Episodic in 4K HD mode, MAX mode disabled allows some software based post tools to render to 1080p in "real time" i.e at 24 fps.

Can't think of another reason :-)

Yes, it states on www.red.com/support : "Note: Supports RED ONE cameras up through Build 20."

Awesome! Support for build 20 color science in Color! This will save me a lot of time.

Thank you Red team for getting the FCP installer out the door so soon after the release of FCP 3.

I'm still wondering if full debayer transcodes resized to 2K/1080 are possible. But I guess I'll have to check when do some testing on my own. Exciting stuff.

Sean,

Since the whitepaper said, 4k footage at half debayer for 2K project will be significantly faster to render that means 2k project with full debayer 4k is working.

Did I read that right? I've been reading about the updates in FCP and I understood it still used the .mov proxies? Can we now bring the R3D in directly?

Wow, so the new color science is already in action when using FC and Color Brent?

Sorry to ask something that seems obvious but I am just trying to make sure I understand correctly.

Does this use the new color science? Can I use it with studio 2? Is there anything different with the new installer, new features, or is it just for cmpatability with the new FCS 3?

compatibility with FCS 3 mainly. We've still got to tie in some of the color processing metadata (color curve, iso, and a few others) that didn't make it into this release due to various timing constraints. That stuff will come soon.

The L&T plugin will only install with FCS 3 (Final Cut Pro 7) -- the quicktime
codec is still compatible with older versions of FCS but will have to be downloaded and installed separately.

Hello Reinhart,

Is the RED QT codec really 3.7.0 in FCS3 installer? Why not the latest 3.8.0?
