  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

New final cut pro released today with native suport for red 4k

Saw the following quote on apples website:

"New 4K support works natively with files from cameras such as the RED ONE and outputs directly to ProRes for HD or DPX for film."

I wonder if this mean that redcode is fully supported across all applications in the new final cut studio?

Thank you for this thread.

Yes. It JUST FEELS TOO GOOD. AND IT'S Beautiful.
Can't say anything about the Price yet-but it's less than you would expect from a Euphonix. I guess you'll have to wait until IBC in Amsterdam!

Greetings from Vienna.

Hey guys there is a pic of the Euphonix MC Color, it looks really nice ! Will be available in fall 2009 but no price yet. It should be around a 1000 dollars I think

any reports from users of the tangent wave?

So it's cheaper (1,000 US$ Euphonix )but is it just as good or better than the tangent panel (1,600 US$)? Tangent have been in the game longer right?

thanks!

Thank you for this thread.

I would continue to read the MacWorld reviews on Google and take this all in with a HUGE GRAIN of salt, about the size of the boulder that once chased down Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones!

So... any chance of getting this thread back on track (new Final Cut release, not controllers, etc...)

As I understand it, the new FC is still wrapping things in a Quicktime wrapper, thus it's KIND OF addressing native files, but not in the same, robust way that Premiere accesses .r3d.

If I am wrong, and the new FC is actually accessing .r3d directly (like Premiere), I could likely be convinced to jump ship back to Final Cut.

As a new user of RED and Premiere, I've gotta say, I'm loving the work flow, but as I've said (again and again and again), if Adobe doesn't address the lack of audio sync options (mainly, utilizing audio time code), then there's no way for them to compete as a realistic Pro Video Editing tool.

Final Cut may be snoozing with the .r3d direct access issue (at least they're pretending to address it), but Adobe is in deep REM in regard to audio.

WTF? IT ACTUALLY WORKS?????? Color me surprised...

WTF? IT ACTUALLY WORKS?????? Color me surprised...

Soooo.... hey skeptics! I just got my FCS3 in yesterday (was going to buy Glue tools for ~$300 - same day as Apple released FCS3 - delighted to see DPX support - anyway, long story short - installed (about 40GB worth for an upgrade version) and piped some of my RED footage in via log and transfer - imagine my surprise when it worked ... and worked well???? WTF? Since when did Color work right and without a hack-around??? Oh - and yeah 4K!!!! With R3D's in a QT wrapper - NOT through those goofy proxies... Those damn things never quite worked right when getting in to color... now, there is no need for them.

OH AND HERE'S THE BIG NEWS - apparently log and transfer accesses your meta data on import - and you can create a base grade in Red Rushes, attach it to the mag, and it will allow you to select that as the color profile - or another "standard" such as daylight or tungsten - or even no meta data (see picture). Very cool. very useful. kind of a hack-around against the QT gamma weirdness in FCP.

Also, Color loves RED footage now. SOOOO Easy to work with - I nearly fell out of my chair when it worked - without me having to call Apple and bitch at them and post a million snotty messages about their development team on their own message boards.

Will now go play Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" and enjoy a well deserved shot of something highly proofed.

Now just waiting for Truelight to make a Color plugin ala Shake/ Nuke and others....

EDIT/ Also - love the new prores4:4:4:4 - I'm finally done with animation codec for graphics! Yay!

Love the fact that you can pick your densities for DPX export based on target - can't for Cineon - but oh well. Would love to hear of anyone testing the ProRes4:4:4:4 for film out workflow (or, better yet, digital projection via a DCI spec color space - can anybody explain that witches brew to me? Would love a clear and concise workflow for going to digital cinema release.
/EDIT

System: MacPro Quad, 4 TB storage, Blackmagic Intensity Pro, 12GB RAM, ATI X1900 dual 24" HP.

Thanks for this because it does give me some hope and I've been unhappy with my FCP for several years now, still trying to figure out how keep my laptop useful and productive after I decide on a more powerful tower. FCP hasn't output quality for the web as well as Adobe and hasn't been able to do high end as well either but perhaps this will help. However, I was also very unhappy with the advertisement Apple put out which didn't reflect on memory and system requirements. I hear the new Motion is even more RAM hungry and am waiting to hear a memory break down on the individual studio memory requirements. Anybody hear anything on this yet? Reviews?

The only reason i don´t use FCP in my Mac pro. When are they going to solve the problem?

When the next version of the operating system (Snow Leopard) is released.

Last week of September along with a major new release of FCS.

A major new release of FCP? Or an update to the one that was just released? I can't imagine they will charge you for a new version just 2 months after this one. Are you just referring to the enhancements they will add for Snow Leopard? I was suspecting a lot of them are already built in but we're just not accessing them until the new OS comes out. Or maybe it will be 7.5, a free upgrade. Let's hope.

FCP has been completely re-written for Snow Leopard. That's a major update in my book. I can't imagine they will charge for the release so soon after this one, but I have no info on that - I just have a date, 26th September.

My guess is this update will include a new version of DVDSP - though that may just be wishful thinking - and most of the changes to FCP will be under-the-hood, to take advantage of the new OS.

When the next version of the operating system (Snow Leopard) is released.

Is there any real confirmation of this anywhere yet? The last beta of SL I saw running still had gamma issues. Then again, I suppose it would still require updates to FCS and Quicktime to solve the issue. Hopefully it all works together correctly this next time around.

I'm starting to think - never.

Understood and what about web output? It is as though there's a secret society that says Adobe must kick Apple's butt in at least TWO SIGNIFICANT categories and be available for cheaper PC systems too just to make up for Apples OS superiority over PC's just to make us want to get both. Are you listening Apple? This is a really useful thread. I'm looking forward to a superior issue in September and more complete information for system requirements in Apple's campaign. P.S. I think you're already part of THE SILENT RESOLUTION MOVEMENT Macgregor!

FCP has been completely re-written for Snow Leopard. That's a major update in my book... <snip>

There's also a major change in Snow Leopard at the system/colorsync level taking the system gamma to 2.2 instead of 1.8. That's a big deal for video. 'Modern' codecs will be automatically managed, older ones will carry through the 1.8 gamma. Most of the other stuff is still under NDA... but it's about time the system gamma was changed (the old 1.8 wasn't really needed once ColorSync came out - '93/'94? can't remember).

Now if only the ROCKETcine-X histograms updated *sigh*...
