Reconform from subclips using Clipfinder? Dual system audio question

Apologies if this has already been discussed, but I didn't find any answers when doing a search.

Basically, I am working on a project that was shot dual system. Meaning the RED footage has no audio and I have separate audio files that need to be synced to the clapper board on each take.

I've already started bringing in the footage using Clipfinder, which is converting it to an intermediary Quicktime format for editing. The goal would be to a reconform after the edit and relink the timeline back to the RED footage so we can output at a higher resolution.

The problem is syncing up the dailies in FCP. The best way I can figure out to go about this, involves making new subclips. Which as far I understand are independent clips. I'm worried that this method of syncing the audio will result in orphaned clips that Clipfinder doesn't know how to relink back to the RED files with, when it's time to reconform.

How do people handle using dual-system audio with FCP and RED? Has anyone had experience reconforming from subclips? Should I use a different workflow than what's outlined?

BUMP

Does no one know the workflow on how to handle dual-system online / offline with RED?

Hi,

I'm Hans, the author of Clipfinder.
Can you mail me a sample XML for a small test project with 2 or 3 subclips with synched audio ?
My mail address is in the integrated Help Pages (CMD-?)

Cheers,
Hans

Create new master clips by selecting (apple-A) the contents of the timeline (picture+sync sound), link everything (apple-L) so all the clip names in the timeline are underlined, and drag-drop it back to a bin in the browser. Label the new master clips with a color because the icon is the same as the R3D. Don't rename the new master clips or they might not link back to the R3D's (if you care). Use the bin names to organize by scene/take.

For some reason when you load the new master clip back into the timeline, FCP changes the name of the sound clip in the timeline to match the R3D, but Reveal in Finder shows the correct clip. Weird...

Finally, Reveal in Browser (shift-F) shows you what bin the clip in the timeline came from.

or try sync n link....although that won't work unless timecode was jammed to camera from sound dept.

i often re-export each clip back out as a self contained QT to be left a folder full of synced QTs that can be passed around like a good joint......

Avid has AutoSync which creates new master clips based on TC or in-marks, sadly FCP 7 has no such feature AFAIK...

Im also having some issues with linking sound, unlike Byron, i do have auidoreference from my clips, but when im trying to link it, it just get messy, couse i lost reference after a while, i guess is the drop frame.
We shot at 24 fps, the sequence is 1920x1080 HDTV 1080i (16:9) 24fps.
Any ideas?

are you sure you recorded sound at 24 or 23.98

are you sure your footage is actually 24 or 23.98

are you sure your sequence settings in FCP are 24 or 23.98

Thanks for the help... For reference, in case anyone has the same issue I tested both "Merge Clips" and making a subclip and Clipfinder was able to online both...

Two issues I came across were that following the Clipfinder help guide, I couldn't figure out how to get the offline Quicktimes to render back out at an online setting. Then I noticed "Convert MOV to R3D," which enabled the online. The documentation should maybe be updated to include this step.

Second, I'm now curious about onlining only the content of the timeline, rather than all the clips associated with the timeline. If I do a media manage in FCP and trim the content to only include content in the timeline will Clipfinder be able to relink this new timeline to the original RED footage for an online?

As I've said elsewhere, FCP doesn't care; some BWF recorders do not stamp 24.00 correctly (or FCP ignores it) and it will attempt to "correct" when it isn't necessary. Workaround is to render all BWF audio into MOV containers with 24.00 TC with Sebsky or another tool.
