Hi Guys

I have worked with RED before but purely doing an Avid workflow using
red rushes and then a fast import. I am now working on my first feature but am having to quickly learn the FCP workflow for RED. Now Ive read many varying opinions on using log and transfer and I can only seem to find manuals that describe the log and transfer workflow. What I was wondering if there anyway of getting Red Rushes to do the bulk of the work before I go to FCP?

Thanks so much

Lauren

I do it for feature always with RR. On Set I'm using clipfinder to make the onelight and generating for each clip a RSX file, so the files will look like wanted in the edit. With RR you can then export the bulk in ProRes. A half standard debayer goes really fast. If you need more quality in the edit you can go on a half high debayer but takes a lot more time. Clipfinder could do the rushes as well. In RR you should then choose the option at look source: RSX, Clip RSX if you generated for every clip the RSX. The conforming after editing could then be done with clipfinder or monkey extract. Quite easy workflow.

Thanks so much for your help

Just a few questions
Im only the edit assist so I wont be choosing certain clips or giving them a one light pass i was planning Just goin straight to RR I will probably go with Half Debayer Do you think that will be alright?

Is Pro Res HQ 1920x1080 the export i should be choosing?

And Whats the best way to bring into FCP Just a simple Import ?

I know I sound like I dont know what Im doing Im just so lost with the FCP workflow and was shocked at how long L&T took to transcode to 422(HQ)

Thanks so Much

Lauren

Are you finishing in ProRes or reconforming to 4k when you're finished? If you're reconforming, just cut with DVCProHD. It's a way faster codec and still pretty decent looking.

hey lauren,

not sure if all your questions got resolved?

My experience is that Red Rushes is stable (never had a crash on a big batch). If you plan to conform w/ third party software, then you should be fine.

However, after you picture lock - if you want to use the FCP batch capture, via Log & Transfer, to do a conform (a very easy, fast process which you then send to Color) - then your footage MUST be transcoded in Log & Transfer (not RR). This is the process described in the RED whitepaper.

I was just burned by this. here's the thread. http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=32287

It's my understanding that Clipfinder doesn't do a true conform - it's essentially a reconnecting to the R3Ds. (meaning, you'll still have the full length files to move around).

Hope this helps.
