OK, trying to get my settings straight. I could keep doing tests, watching tutorials and reading every white paper or contradictory posting out there - or I could pose the questions here. Well, time to seek the wisdom of those who've traveled the path.

Here are the AE settings I've deduced so far based on R3D footage shot in RedSpace:

In After Effects -
Turn off "Interpret as Linear light
Project settings - Color settings - depth: 32 bits per channel (float)
Working Space - (Had "None") changed to HDTV (Rec. 709) (not HDTV Rec. 709 16-235)

Is this all correct so far? Should I have HDTV (Rec. 709) 16-235. I believe it should be 0-255 for digital doesn't have 7.5 setup - is that correct?

Also, should I check "match legacy after effects quicktime gamma adjustments"?

Sincerely appreciate any wisdom on this,
Dale

So, you just would like some more contradictory postings?:reddevil:

well, check this -
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/aftereffects/articles/color_management_workflow.html

however, setting working profile to anything different from Rec.709 (or sRGB) in AFX causes lots of problems. If You target on HDTV, You want to stick to Rec.709 and live happily. If targetting cinema, then problems start to pop everywhere. Different white temp, overbright white among others. These lucky of us use lustre, scratch and so on, in afterFX this is gonna be more than interesting. That's why I ask in this forum, what do I see in source settings dialog in AFX, when I change my LCD's white temp to anything different from 6500K sRGB uses.

Ha-ha Jake, knew someone would respond with that once I wrote it. Just didn't think you'd be so quick. Now humour aside, you look like a very talented colorist - how about you impart some of your wisdom:):cheers2:

Stepan, that Adobe workflow paper was amazing. Been looking all over for something like that.

Also read the follow-up paper: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/aftereffects/articles/image_state_adjustment.html

But I'm still left with a few questions. I'm going both HD and SD broadcast. So, in project settings I'm setting depth to 16 bits or 32 bits??? (Adobe 1.7 tutorial video show 32 bits, but this paper says there might be problems with some effects - what do you suggest) and workspace is set to HDTV (Rec. 709). I also check "compensate for Scene-referred Profiles".

In Interpret footage I assigned Profile: Working Space - HDTV (Rec. 709) - though as I went through the clips in the timeline I noticed a number had somehow defaulted to sRGB IEC1966-2.1. Is this a problem?

Interpret as Linear Light: Off

Now hear is one of my main confusions - in Interpret footage (more options), I bring up the red source settings. In the adobe 1.7 tutorial video I noticed color space was REDspace and Gamma curve was REDspace as well. I shot REDspace for I had some issues with Rec.709 in some of the earlier builds. Do I now (in Red R3D settings) keep color space at REDspace and just change the gamma curve to Rec. 709 or keep it Redspace and REdspace?

One final question. I shot a lot of DSLR timelapse which is also in this timeline. The DSLR was converted to 4k Photo-JPEG streams. Do I keep those at sRGB IEC1966-2.1?

Note: I did edit the text rules in advance for Rec 709.

Thank you for any help on this.

Sincerely,
Dale

the footages looks wash out if I set "Interpret as Linear Light: Off"
so should we adjust RED R3D source setting until it looks right ?

Would love to help, but I'm not using AE for grading. As far as color space, use RedSpace and for gamma just stick with Rec-709 for everything and you'll be fine, if you're finishing for video. Can't imagine you would do film grading with AE:)
