Im interested in the Red Cart announced in Red.com http://www.red.com/store/804005 , it looks just like the Yaeger from film tools http://www.filmtools.com/fil24eqcar.html, the Red Cart has a better price but i can't find an option for tripod hooks on their website, i was wondering if the Yaeger accessories fits and work well on the RED CART, any experience with this? or any cart recommended?
all best

Over a thousand $ for a trolly? Am i missing something?

Can't you just get one second hand from a failed airline?

Just buy the filmtools.com magliner style cart with all pneumatic wheels and you'll be much happier. Plus, you'll save some $$$!

The Yeager hands down beats the snot out of a magliner. Yeager is worth every penny.
I own a Yeager, a Kartmaster hd-500 http://www.kart-a-bag.com/html/kartmaster-hd500.html (with shelves) and some other assorted dollies. If you are going to go the Magliner route, the Kartmaster is a pretty good option because it folds up so small. It's great for travel.

Vertical Cart

Vertical Cart

Nick et al,

What specifically makes the Yeager / Red better? Is the action smooth enough to use as a dolly? without wheel locks it seems like it would be hard to control. Lighter weight, ease of set up etc?

I need a general purpose / camera cart, and was leaning toward one of the collapsible ones because I'm hard pressed to get any more equip into the truck.

I'm also looking for a cart for a DIT station, and was leaning toward one of the vertical offerings e.g. http://www.filmtools.com/vidtrancar.html

They are deep enough for a MacPro or rack mount enclosure on the bottom and have a keyboard shelf. There look to be good options for a monitor shelf and or pins. Seems like a pretty good fit.

Anybody have any experience with the transformers?

Best,

Steve

I might as well just have my paycheck wired to Filmtools, Able, and Red.

These are not made to substitute a dolly. They are designed to carry your gear. The mitchel plate is to hold your camera while you build your rig.

I like ours because they are solid and well made, large enough to carry all our cases and it handles a large load easily. It is solid aluminum and has a large lip around each shelf. We use one for camera and one for cases.

Only drawback to the Kartmaster is travel can damage your shelves if you check them through without protection. Kartmaster does have a nifty travel case that holds all parts, but when loaded up, it weighs in at over 100lbs, and then you no longer can check it, you have to air freight it. All said I used Kastmasters for years teching digital still shoots, they are the best for that application (and in studio), not so much on location.

Yeah, as I said the Kartmaster is good for travel. The main difference about what we are talking about here is this -

The Yeager is a work platform. You build the camera on it, you move the camera on it, and it hauls your stuff. A cart like the Magliner or Kartmaster usually ends up as a mag or a lens cart. Basically a way to move cases from point a to b, not a platform to work off of.

I mainly use the Kartmaster just to schlep gear. I sometimes use it as a steadicam cart if I have to travel. The yeager needs at least a van with a ramp. If I have a day where I need to take my steadicam rig only, and I don't want to hassle with parking my van (garages etc.) I can throw the Kartmaster in the back of my Explorer.

They have different uses is all.

I've been happy with my Red/Yeager cart. It's a bit more of a hassle to put in my vehicle. It's a bit more expensive. But on features it's a good camera cart. On smaller jobs, it's a nice DIT station for my 24" iMac.

It fits through doors and into elevators easily. It has 4 nice pneumatic tires that I can safely roll across a marble floor. (Though it would be nice if those tires had come secured with lock nuts!) ;-)

Do you really need a van and a ramp? It looks like the Yeager folds down and has tiny travel wheels.

We never tear down our Yeagers, but have a van w/ Ramp. If you need to tear down and rebuild often you are better off with the Magliner or Kartmaster. But yes, the Yeager has wheels built-in to haul-it compacted, just not an ideal cart to tear down.

We have Yeager Senior carts in Rental in NY. Only time anyone folds them down is for transport/storage. They're great carts although I did need to add a monitor spud on the tripod hook crossbar as well as a codura pouch to hold the pack-down bars & tool when the cart is built. We also changed out all the hex bolts for small wingnut handled bolts to make like easier for rental clients.

A few features I like about them:

- heavy duty construction will last forever
- when collapsed, all the parts fit inside, no need to strap stuff together with bungees
- room to really work and to accessorize the crap out off
- nifty storage tray for a hihat on the bottom
