  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone else mount their RED cradle like this?

I found a cool mounting method for the RED cradle, but I'm not sure if any people mount this way already. I haven't seen it that often.

3 bolts, no top rails, very solid and strong.

not resting on the top handle at all. I guess that picture shows a bad angle. As far as vibrations, I assume it would be the same as traditional mounting methods.

There's no longer a picture there, unless it's just me.

interesting... nice for a lightweight setup.

Top heavy and somewhat difficult to put into a case build up. However youve eliminated the need for a third top mount and rods, Which is great. Ive done that on a show or two.

I had it set-up as such, but then the screws got loose every now and then and I had to tighten them up a lot, so change the handle and used only the top handle instead of the one you are using and screwed the cradle on top of the back mount rather than on the holes in the back.

It looks like a great idea. Looks like a good way to get it out of the way for access to the back panel and then also quick access to the top handle all while getting rid of two rails.

Forgive the basic questions, but can you use the 90 degree connector on the camera and the straight on the drive to prevent from having the cable press any buttons? Would that help at all or would it be worse in some way?

Also, does the articulation move without the need to use any tools?

The 90 degree angle hits the power cable to the camera, so it wont work. But the connector to the drive doesn't hit any buttons unless it's at the lowest position.

I still think the best setup is battery in one pocket, drive in the other with long cables, lightweight setup anyways

Battery maybe, but unless the drive is the Red Ram I am not sure it is a good idea. :) The issue though could be if the battery bothers the operator, then it is a no-no. Otherwise you are probably right.

I would really like Joseph's idea for myself with a straight cable to make it as low as possible, then the 1AC can swing it up when necessary. Do they make cables that are straight on both ends?

I have mounted mine from the top mount ever since I got my camera. I use a different handle than the RED nowadays, so I am able to mount the cradle on the top of the top mount. Never had a screw get loose. I did have to change out all the 1/4 factory screws for stainless steel, though. They rusted within a few weeks.

Normally ours is mounted at the back on the top rails, but I recently shot a movie and when putting it on the crane (from SECCED) I mounted the hard drive/battery assembly on the bottom rails in order to balance the camera:

I love the flexibility of Red! Can't wait to use the smaller and lighter modular Epic!

Cheers,
