  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Golf Club Hard Cases for traveling

I use one when I need to fly with my tripod (I've never liked those Nalpak cases where you have to shake the 'pod out onto the floor; the clamshell-style seems much more user friendly). Depending on the airline, it might even save you a couple of bucks (since "sports equipment" often flies cheaper than other excess baggage).

I've been using a hard clam shell golf club case for several years now for air travel with my tripods. Over the last few years there's been a couple previous threads here on RED User about that.

I'm not a big fan of the drop-in tripod cases made my tripod manufacturers. I really like the hard, flip-open, clam shell golf cases. I don't really trust the little clamp locks on those case though, so I simply had an inexpensive custom cable with looped ends made at my local hardware store, and I wrap it around the middle of the case, through the handle, and lock it with a small TSA-approved lock when I fly.

The cool thing is that though most airlines charge for oversize baggage items (like tripod cases!), many of them don't charge extra for golf club cases. I'm guessing their reasoning on that is that someone who can afford to take golf vacations is a reasonably affluent frequent flyer - someone they want to keep as a recurring client - thus they make an effort to keep them happy by not charging extra for oversize golf club cases. Tripods weigh about the same as a case of golf clubs, and in X-ray look very similar, so they don't raise objection about the odd-shaped "golf clubs" I fly with!

I use the exact one you linked to Elliot... Its bad ass and strong. Beware of the cheaper one on Amazon, its very flimsy.

I use one similar to that for my tripods, but nowhere near that quality. Mine's a bit cheaper than that. The ' hang-upsidedown-and-shake' cases just don't cut it for me, and are too time consuming when in a time crunch - setting up or when on the move.

I think my golf case was 129 bux. hard shell and has served very well. You just need to pad well since baggage handlers are not the most gentle of creatures...

Just returned from traveling with the Red to California using the SKB case. Worked flawless for transporting fragile water housings + red acces./lensing + other crap. Weighed in at 65lbs loaded, got charged $100, but it was a third bag. So far so good.
