  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How can I extract/see the S4/i Lens Data ?

After recording, is there anyway to access the S4/i Lens Data? I thought it was saved down in the .r3d file, but I can't find anything in Redcine or access it in After Effects/Premiere (looked at the metadata tab, and its all blank except the standard in/out points).. I've searched through the forum, but haven't found any discussion about this at all.. Am I nuts? :eek:ut:

Im still running B17 btw (I hope I don't have to upgrade the firmware, don't have a Mac = no RedAlert)..

Oh, I got the Red 18-50mm Zoom... But that doesn't help me at all. I can see the information from the Lens in the display on the camera during recording. But then what? I can't see the recorded information anywhere afterwards.
 
so as i know it is at the moment not possible to read it out.... probably the only possibility at the moment would be the export csv function in RR, but dont see the parameters....
 
I wonder if the lens data is really saved down in the .r3d file, since it seems that this would be enabled by now in either RedCine or Redalert by now... Can anyone from Red share some info here? I looked everywhere for an answer by now, but Im still empty handed.
 
I'm still quietly hoping for LDS data (Arri MPs and UPs) to be supported some time. Maybe the Epic.

It’s one of those things that still need to be addressed; Metadata! I’m not sure how you address it because of at least two different systems. Possibly it would be easier in the Cook lenses because of the positioning of the contacts between the camera and the lens. However I’m sure there is a solution for it to be address in the Arri, it could be a simple as another lens adaptor on subsequent cameras (EPIC and Scarlet).

Cook has an excellent line up of Prime lenses with its S4/i Prime Lenses, and of course we all know about the Arri Master Prime Lenses. Cook publishes their S4/I Communications protocols, I don’t know what Arri does, but it remains a problem for a future solution.

I tried Birger mount and the same thing.
Lens metadata is visible in EVF while recording but no sign of it in the saved clip.

With an earlier version of the R3D files (build 17 or 18, not sure which subversion) the lens data is stored with each frame, in the frame header. At 24fps there was a new value of the calculated lens data ("D" binary+checksum) every second or third frame, which corresponds to the 8ish Hz that the camera was querying the port. The response to the fixed lens data query ("N"), was either not there, or it was encrypted. I do not know what the current state of the lens data is, I can only speak to this fifteen minute exploration, with a total of three or four R3D files made quite some time ago.

Interesting- so how does one access this data?

I'm very interested in being able to extract that data from various shots. (I'm shooting with the Red 18 - 50mm

We're going have to hope Jim and ARRI can talk together. I know ARRI sees themselves as a different company when it comes to their camera accessories product development (at least that's what they say when you talk to them). I'm also hoping that RED can let ARRI in on Epic, so I can use my WRC-2 with it (changing speeds and speed ramp etc). I know ARRI would be willing to implement it to their sys, but is RED ready to let them in?
 
Upgraded to latest build 20, and the new RedCine, but still can't see any lens info after recording :( And now Red says that the features for build 20 are locked down, so does this mean we will have to wait until build 21 until we actually can use the lens data?
 
I would also like to know where the lens data is... is there a way to view this lens data in any program?
