  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Steven Soderbergh's "The Informant" trailer

For just one second try and forget it was shot on RED and see it as a movie... do you want to see it when it comes out in september? I think that is the question you have to ask yourself...
My answer is yes. I thought it looked pretty damn funny and well directed...

Movie looks funny, and I'll definitely go see it but generally this kind of posting is about analyzing the image. For me, this look doesn't work from a technical or artistic point of view. We get terabytes of RED footage in here every week so Im well aware of what RED is capable of. We don't have to love everything that is created by people we love (RED and Soderbergh). I love the work both of them do but this is a clear 'missed by a mile look' in my very humble and solely personal opinion.

I'm totally into this look!

I think if I was gonna go for that 1989 fog filter look I would have done a huge amount of front lighting through diffusion. Motivated daylight INT. or EXT. was a total no-no! :001_tt2:

Also digging that they are selling this as a comedy. SS is hit or miss for me but I am thinking this looks like a winner.

I love the images from my RED. If only for artistic choice, I think Steve could have shot this with S16 with better results. Not a slam, but the blooms just look like bad F900 video.

It looks like if you didn't tell me I wouldn't know that it was RED. And that's the greatest compliment I can think of.

That's my point, I hope people don't think it is RED. I have to battle the film VS. RED thing with our clients. I'm pushing the RED over 35mm constantly and don't think the look of the Informant helps my cause. I know that's selfish but that's world of commercial advertising for me.

The F900 does not cause halation around highlights. I don't see why you guys are getting so bent out of shape over a little bit of diffusion on the lens. I've seen 35mm movies shot with this look.

(Double-Fogs have a proud history, probably most famous for being used on Altman's movies shot by Vilmos Zsigmond, like "McCabe and Mrs. Miller", "The Long Goodbye" or some things shot by Zsigmond for DePalma, like "Obsession.")

If your really that desperate to shoot red why don't you go off and make your own short film or something. If a client wants 35mm film then they want 35mm film It is they're money.

looking forward to seeing it for story...not so much for image. the skin tones, the blooming, ugh, look at Damon's face when he profiles...you see the freaking base makeup line. Kind of distracting to say the least. Ouch.

Mr. Fool... your posts are valid and interesting. But we need a real name. It isn't fair to those that have succumbed to the rules.

Considering Steven has had his Reds for as long as just about anybody (I think), I'd have to assume that at this point he knows how to get the absolute best out of the camera. He could light it to look relatively "perfect". He could utilize every ounce of image quality available. So, when I see this trailer, I come to the conclusion that he has chosen a style, a look that suited the story for him. He made conscious decisions to filter it the way he did, to color balance it the way he did. That's what makes this a movie and not a RED movie.

Now whether the movie is any good, that's something we'll have to wait and see but I'm interested in seeing it.

"The Informant" look is a sort of POPCORN style of drama or even comedy, all is a bit kitschy and defused, like a time and country/region (in US) from where the original story is coming.

Like it or not it's a true story about that funny character and FBI... all is a bit kitschy and defused... like they were in a real world...

Redgoat, I see your point, but here's a thought; why don't you compile a Red reel that shows off different looks and styles. That would be the best way to sell the Red to your clients. Then they'd know that the Red has plenty of visual range. That would serve you, and Red more effectively.

In fact I think I'll do that myself. I have plenty of styles I'd like to explore and a Red demo reel like that would be quite an effective discussion point.

And yeah, I'd like to see more real names.

Burn Before Reading trailer had me dying to see the movie but the movie itself was pretty weak. We'll have to wait and see - I'm not really seeing something as good as Thank You for Smoking in this trailer.

As far as the look goes I'm fine with it. I don't like some of Soderberg's lighting choices but mostly I was watching the story. That's a good thing.

It looks like a good movie. Image wise... I don't think this one will be winning any awards.

it fits the 90's look a lottt. I was like.. woah that looks like it was made long ago.. almost technocolor.. but at certain instances when the faces are all like popsicle orangish-red without side/backlighting... urghhh... Annoying. see video @ 31s, and especially 33s...

The diffusion definately adds to the style, but if only they had used 1 fog filter instead of two. some shots are tooo foggy. which again.. Annoying. see video @ 11s, 17s, 20s, hated 54s cause I was so into the story and that halo effect off the lamp in the back just fuckkkingg annoyed the shit out of me and i completely lost it.

Though I must admit after 54s, things kinda improved... and started to look less foggy and i liked it. I even laughed at how dumb the infromant is as a character at some point. Will watch the movie when it comes out on blu-ray, wont watch it in the movies though. Seems like a funny movie. I know i'll laugh.. im a comedy kinda guy.

soderbergh has been hit and miss with me too. I didn't quite like the girlfriend expericence, I wasn't able to continue watching the movie after 15 minutes, 'cause I have the attention span of a 5 year old and the movie was shot like... there was no script, no dp, no sound, no lighting, the actors arent really actors, there's just this kid in the corner of the room trying this camera out while he shoots his parents talking to each other about stuff that have nothing to do with anything. there's no conflict, no character.. no nothing. I couldn't just go on.
