I hope this is the correct place to put this info. I have in the past been called all manner of things even a luddite becos I was vocal in my quest for sharp focus. IT really is important to recognise that however good a lens may be and whoever manufactured the lens the back focus may be out. Especially the stills lenses remanufactured in PL mounts. Accepting that this measurement is correct, and many are not, straight from the factory, We now need to check the Focul Depth of the camera. IT IS SO VERY IMPORTANT as it affects definition and more it helps your images.
A "cool" new tool The NULL LENS from ABEL CINE TECH [Mitch Gross] does this for you with a little assistance from yourself. Its really excellent and I reccomend you watch the film on the Abel site.
It says all I was ever trying to say about the situation.
Now video guys who never shot film must re learn that film / bigchip lenses operate differently and you dont rack them the same way as a video lens. This tool is the way forward without doubt.
I hope those who berrated me will now understand what I was trying to get across to Video camera users.
I am not a paid employee of Abel but, they are cool guys.
I just want sharp pictures whatever the camera medium, Film - Video - Wet string all shot on a bottle, it has to be sharp before we start.
I await the letters with interest.

From the video that looks impressively easy. I hope it really is inexpensive too.

Wow, thanks Tony. We worked hard with IB/E to develop a product that would be straightforward and precise to use. The NULL will be available soon and there are some fun announcements to come along with it (more soon). Anyone interested can contact an Abel Sales rep. in our NY, LA or Chicago offices or you can use this link to place an order:

You are talking about using this tool before a real shoot just to be sure that the lenses are close?

Use it before a shoot to set the collimation of your lens mount. Use it after shipping the camera to make sure the collimation of the mount is still accurate. Use it after hanging a heavy zoom off the front to make sure the mount is still correct. Use it again and again because this can be a real issue for people.

Fast & easy to use. Available soon.
