Ok, basically i have a Sony HDR FX1E. I am intrigued by the RED brand and want to enquire further. Looking at the red scarlet kit, i see it is around the same price range as my sony. My question to this lovely :Angel_anim: community is do you think it would be worth the switch?

I aspire to make broadcast quality documentaries (i know its a long shot) but basically weight, quality and lenses are an issue. So yeah, worth switching to red scarlet? or not?

or maybe switch to a different red for a noticible upgrade?

Cheers in advance :)

The Scarlet will be worlds apart form the FX-1. A camera that gained popularity despite IMO being a very compromised device. Sony have since made quite a few great compact cameras (EX-1,3 & Z7) but you should be prepared for a completely different approach with the Scarlet. First of all we do not really know what the price of the final shooting configuration Scarlets will be. But based on the R1 I would expect to spend 50% more that the listed price on accessories. This is by no means a bad thing Red has taken all of these capabilities down market so much that it's now possible to afford them. Just be aware that there is more the equation than just the "Basics".

That should be fine, im looking for a challenge. Price included! FX1 is a good camera, but the HDV format is kind of rogue. and although the camera itself can shoot broadcast standard, i think many people would agree that the broadcast standard on the FX1 isn't great....
