Just wondering...
whose going to gear up and get the S35 in september?

(wondering how many people I'm going to have to wait behind the minute that announcement goes up for public release after R1 owners get their fill :emote_head_explode: )

Also what are the reasons for any R1 users getting it and what new users are going to do with their scarlet...as in...TV shows, Films...just want to get a general idea of what crowd is heading for the S35 over the other scarlets...

The S35 Scarlet is certainly the one I have my eye on.

Just out of interest, where and when did you hear the S35 Scarlet will be available in September? Have there been any announcements recently that I've missed? Or are you working on the assumption that RED are still on schedule to deliver the S35 in "Summer 2009" and Sept is roughly the end of Summer?

I'm working on the assumption that RED is on schedule...which they sound like it. I'm also going with the assumption that they'd ramp up making these things by about december time if not earlier, (if they do indeed ship in september).
I may have a bit too much faith but I'm willing to be disappointed for a product that will give so much for so little.

I don't mean to inject too much optimism here, but the announcement was Summer, and there have been other announcements specifically for August... so I'm betting that they hit August for the s35. Some will call it wild speculation of course, I prefer to call it faith. :)

Nothing wrong with faith but I think in this case it might be misplaced. As far as I understand Jannard has communicated that they won't be pushing and working overtime to hit these previous deadlines. Possibly pushing everything back a couple of months. I also, again correct me if I am wrong but hasn't Jannard also said they are making some modifications due to what the competition is doing. Anyway I hope I am wrong but my optimistic bet would be Summer becoming Autumn.

Yes, my forecast for the next three months calls for faith, with a mixture of pragmatic skepticism. :biggrin5:

I think that if the S35 were going to be released by august or September, we would have heard by now. Soon as Jim lets us put down a deposit, I am on it. I have a nice Nikon lens collection waiting to be used.

Well, the Red Rocket was only announced roughly 3 months before the product ships. RedCine-X much later.

I have the feeling that since Jannard & Co. have changed how they communicate about product development since "the other guys have started listening", they will now announce any new product hitting the store about 3 months before it's available.

That way, they are not seen as unreliable when specs change, the other companies can't beat them to the punch in terms of features and a quarter of a year is plenty of warning for people to get their finances in order.

They've reigned in their communication a bit and Redusers have respected that so I don't see this model changing now. In a way it's a shame, it always felt like Jim, Jarred and Graeme were inviting us into their garage for another peek at this whacky invention that would change the world...once it starts working.

Totally understandable though. I for one hope that I can get an S35 or a couple of 8xFixed 2/3 around January.

We would have heard what, still another release announcement? No, I think all that has been covered already. Going forward, I can buy into the notion that we might hear product release announcements 3 months out. That seems reasonable to me, but I don't expect to hear anything more about the Scarlet until units become available... Holding out hope for August, expecting December or January. That's where I am.

To get back to the question of s35 or not, I'm still not certain if I'm going for the s35 or FF, but I'm hoping to be in a position to pull the trigger on one of them within the next 8-12 months, not necessarily right on the release date. I usually like to hear the early feedback first.

I'm just curious, if you take price out of the picture, what do you get with the Scarlet S35 that you do not already get with the RED ONE?

Or is it really just the price drop for the same technology that is driving this interest in S35 vs. the R1?

:confused5:

Larger sensor, FF1080p, price drop, most probably more lightweight, highly customizable... Those are all good reasons I think.

Ok, FF1080P is a plus. But, is a larger sensor necessarily an "upgrade" if you're still using cine lenses that are not meant for 30x15mm sensors. Scarlet won't come equipped with a PL Mount like R1, so just tack that onto the cost. The frame-rate options of Scarlet S35 vs. R1 seem comparable. Maybe I'm missing something, but All-in-all it just seems like the wait is really for the price-drop and not really for the technology. (Just talking about Scarlet S35 and below.) :smile5:

I was very tempted by the 5dII but the 12-min record times is the deal breaker for me. I shoot a lot of interviews and my clients wouldn't look kindly on me if I keep saying "oh, sorry - one moment - the camera's turned off".

Sorry... didn't mean to de-rail this thread!...

+1 . Then again, Canon never intends this to be a competitor to their full fledged vidcams. I do a lot of stuff that stretches beyond 12 mins so, it's a deal breaker for me. However, does this cam capture out to a DTE recorder via HDMI ?

I'm looking at the S35 because of the broad range of high quality and relatively affordable lenses suitable for that model - and because it will be the first model out as far as I know :emote_happyhappy:

Being a keen SCUBA diver I will use the S35 primarily for underwater videography - I have been using Sony camcorders combined with Amphibico or Light & Motion housings for that purpose so far. It will be very interesting to see what underwater housing will be made for the Scarlet - definitely not a simple task given the modular and flexible nature of the system...

I have sold two of my projects previously, including one to a national tv channel in Denmark, but basically I am just a happy amateur, no plan on earning any money on my Scarlet investment. However, I do love the idea of having such a great tool at my disposal

Cheers
Dan
