  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

If I shot 4k I believe the sharpest image for 1080 final would be from cropping a full 2k debayer down to 1920 x 800 for 2.4:1. I briefly corroborated with a little experimenting where resizing resulted in a slight fuzziness while a 1:1 crop stayed much sharper.

1. My first questions is if there is an affordable plug in of sorts to get more detail out of the 4k though advanced resizing as opposed to cropping? It sounds like a whole lot of rendering but I thought I'd ask.

2. Also, will 5k give us more 1:1 1080 resolution in a 2k debayer? Or would it have to be a 2.5k debayer? How would I go about seeking the most detail for 1080 from 5k?

Right now, probably the sharpest 1080P would come from shooting 4K HD RAW (aka Quad HD, 3840 x 2160) and downsample 3.8K RGB to 1080P.

Second would be to downsample converted 4K RAW-to-4K RGB to 1080P.

Third would be to simply crop 4K RAW-to-2K RGB conversion to 1080P.

Fourth would be to downsample 4K RAW-to-2K RGB to 1080P.

Just a guess.

Awesome Guess...Tks

David, instead of using resizing filter (debayer full and let SDK resize from 4K to HD), I'm getting better results from 4K footage with half high debayer detail (instead of full) with OLPF compensation on to be rendered at HD. Would that be wrong?

Good question...
Kaku are you using this?
Can u share your experience?
Some picts?

I'm working on a feature film and the DP liked the output from the 1/2 high, so I'm totally using this.

I can make sample pics from out test shoots.

Half-High is a special algorithm I developed to get a very high quality, sharp, 2k from 4k (or 1080p from Quad HD) - it does demosaic, downsample and sharpening all in one single step. To my eyes, it makes some of the very nicest 2k I've seen, but I'm biassed.

4k demosaic, then downsample to 2k can have a touch more detail and a touch lower noise. Overall, there's very little in it, but half-high is a lot faster.

Remember resolution / detail is part of a triangle:

-> Low Aliasing -> High Resolution/Detail -> Low Ringing

You can have any combination of the three, but you can't have all of those qualities together!

The DP that I'm working with, even Imagica's colorists were impressed with the half-high rendering with OPLF compensation on and it's significantly faster! So, the special algorithm that you figured out really worked for us.

Thanks Graeme.

Kaku, would love to see some pics. I presume 1/2 high to 2K for filmout? Lim

Ahhh, thank you for the answer to a mystery, Graeme. I have been using the half-high to go 4K HD to HD for awhile now with happy clients. I didn't have a clue about how it worked, but I liked the results. I appreciate the time-savings that does not sacrifice quality.

BTW, got my Red back after the audio/etc. upgrades. Very quick turnaround, less than a week. The Fedex dude surprised me with the Big Box today. Cudos to all at Red! Separation anxiety is over...

graeme, my hat goes off to you for developing half high, it's been a lifesaver on my current project.

Thank You so much Mr. Nattress...always learning here.

Half-High is not in Redcine, due to the way that app works. However, it is in the Quicktime support, RedAlert, RedLine etc.

Will Redcine-X include it (half-high) ... ie: parallels the rendering quality of RA ?

Great, so I'm at piece of mind to hear the similar opinions about the half-high output.

As Graeme mentioned, it works with REDLine, so I've been taking advantage of this with Monkey Extract renders.

Tai Wah, I will post the pics after I finish the feature film work in few days.

Graeme,

Does Color takes advantage of Half-high if it was set in the REDCODE preference?

Color uses it's render proxy settings to determine half-standard or half-high.

Graeme

I see, so we set the proxy settings to High to achieve the same result as half-high? Even, so halfhigh with OLPF "on" from Redline looking sharper to me.

Graeme,

More over, on Macintosh environment, can you tell me what gamma level does RED SDK renders for QT and DPX.

Does REDCINE displays material with gamma 2.2 over system gamma being 1.8? I'm assuming so.
