  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cheapest Scarlet Cine Setup: Guestimation?

...
and remote modul
and SSD Red drive
and hi-powerd PC/MAC with hi-res monitor and capable software
maybe laptop for on site control and wrangling of data
and tons of HDD to save your footage
good tripod and head
probably FF for precise focusing - crucial thing for this camera
MB with set of ND filters, and IR cut hot mirror filter
... and some case for all this stuff

:001_smile:
That's right!

:attention9ha:

I agree with all but the follow focus. Useful but probably not essential. But I suppose it depends on the application.

Thanx Stefan.

But beware, I am not DP, I am just an observer who want to make some good footage in future.
Therefore pay attention to really good and experienced DP's, you will learn a lot.

Big question is price for other modules.
Viewfinder and LCDs too. That ones for Red aren't cheap. Even if you cut that price by 1/2 you are at price of 2/3" brain. Maybe that will force lot of people towards fixed one.

..and I guess we also need that basic stuff like battery module, couple batteries and charger
and dont forget cables, cables and some more cabels
and really good tool so you dont get stuck in a middle of shooting because of damaged head of screw when you need change one lens mount for another
maybe some basic shoulder rig with grips will be usefull too
raincover
...

There's also a whole lot of this type of gear that can be had used and cheap though. The stuff you really need to get out there and shooting is the following though.

Brain.
Battery
Viewfinder
Redhandle
Shoulder Rig
Tripod+head
Mics
IO Module/audio recorder w/ phantom power
Lenses - s16 zooms can be had quite cheaply for a broad focal length range, and if you're on a low budget shoot you can get away with it. but there are also good prime sets out there cheap(though admittedly, getting wide-angle stuff gets pricey)
Computer - Probably at least a quad core with 4GB+ memory(and the new in-camera 1080p RGB mode can drastically simplify post-workflow)
Software - FCP, Premiere, or Vegas all give a workable environment relatively inexpensively

Getting a follow-focus in there would definitely broaden your capabilities, but as you said it's not completely necessary

This would obviously be quite barebones, but it will be adequate for just shooting, and you could probably get away with a setup like this for under $5k, excluding the computer(but most here already have the box and the software necessary for 3k processing.)

Fair enough. I don't really mind getting used modules as long as the brain is new.

My laptop (MBP, c2d 2.6ghz, 4gigs of ram) handles the r3d files I've tested fine so far, and I'll probably spring for a Mac Pro when I get more money.

The REDhandle supposedly houses a battery(that I guess comes seperate), am I correct?

Thanks guys for the input.
