Shot this at the beginning of the week with my newly acquired 100mm Zeiss ZF f~2 Macro lens that I got from Duclos Lenses. The job was just to get these still frames as they are going to be used as a web banner of some kind. It was shot in 2K 2:1 120fps RC28 and the ISO is at 800. The reason why the ISO is so high is that I needed the extra light even at Noon. The shutter running at maximum speed along with the 120fps sucked up all the light. All these shots were either done at f~2.2 or f~2.4, which made it a little tricky with the super shallow DOF. Distance from the front of the lens to the water drop was about 12" or so. Tried to get it in 4K but the shutter wasn't fast enough at 1/2000th as the drop would look very blurry, when we would by chance get it in the frame.

Also this was shot with Build 20 to CF cards.

This doesn´t make sense to me. Shutter speed is shutter speed, as long as the framing is the same, it should look the same.

Nice!

But also i can see from those grabs that a bit CA and purple fringing occurred.

Don't forget that lenses are not Made in Germany by Zeiss.

They are made by Cosina in Japan.

Here are the examples shot on RED with Leica Elmarit-R 60mm f/2.8 with 1:1 magnification adapter.

Much better handling of CA... the product is Made in Germany and that means something in lens industry...

nice shoot, nice cristal!

Great looking shot. Beautiful texture and depth.
Can we see the the frame where the drop breaks on the ground?

I'll post some impact shots when I get home from the shoot today.

I had my shutter speed set relative to the frame rate. So at 120fps 1/2000th of a second becomes 1/10,000 of a second. Its the only way that those shots would make any sense because in 4K 1/2000 they were very blurry.

I'm sure that CA wouldn't be that bad if I wasn't wide open or near to being wide open on the lens. If I had the money to get a set of Leica lenses I would buy a set of PL glass instead. The Leica lenses are very nice but way too much for a still lens. I'm happy with my Zeiss set. I just need to get the 21mm and I should be good. The Zeiss lenses are nice for me and work for what I need to get done.

Leica R lenses are not more expensive then Zeiss ZF, second-hand are even cheaper.

The prices of Leica M lenses are in a range of RPPs.

That's another story...

And for example I paid for Leica Elmarit R 60mm f/2.8 with 1:1 adapter Euro 520.00 here in Leica Shop in Vienna
and a brand new Zeiss Ikon 100mm f/2.0 Makro Planar ZF Manual Focus Macro Lens for the Nikon F (AI-S)
Bayonet SLR System costs $1,450.00 at Adorama Online Shop.

But I've probably got a better macro lens!!!

Nice shots Andrew! My favorite is the 2nd one, I love the light inside the shadow of the droplet

Okay, I might have been over doing it as the price of the Leica R lenses. Most of the time you seem to be posting using the Leica M lenses. To be fair I've never dealt with a Leica lens and I'm curious about the mechanics of them. If that are anything like the Zeiss ZFs that I have, which as the only still lenses I've ever used that feel like a cinema lens. Mainly in construction and in the focus rings. I just wish Zeiss would make a ZF mount 18mm f~2.8.

Yeah that's one of my favorite ones as well. Crazy thing is that I could have been a little closer to the drop. But it was tough just getting them to hit in the right spot on a windy day.

Andrew,

if you once find a time go to Kevin Camera shop in LA to have a look at some Leica R affordable vintage glass.

Also both made in Germany or Canada are pretty good.

Maybe the best mechanics/optics you would get with a still photo glass.

BTW, Birger mount with EOS to Leica R adapter is a way to go with it or you go with ActionCam Leica R to RED1 mount (email for that to info@actionproducts.ch)

My P+S Technik Universal mount for RED1 just forget it because...

I know about the thing with P+S Technik and the RED, that it voids the warranty. Too bad because it seems like a really smart idea. I might have to go and check out that shop next time I'm down that way to see what these lenses are all about.

But isn't there no wider Leica M's other than the 28mm f/2 or the 21mm f2.8?

Andrew, I would love to see that drop in motion no matter how small you have to make it or how big the watermark. Nice shot!

Roberto,

Leica M system has 21mm f/1.4 that is the fastest wide angle of any 35mm still lenses, also 24mm has f/1.4 option...

Noctilux M 50mm f/0.95 is the fastest FF35 in production...
