Hi,

I realize the scarlet's not out yet but does anybody know if you can use a secondary lens with a fixed lens camera to capture small things like bugs or is there too much distortion. I'd rather go with Scarlet's variable lens configuration but the Scarlet fixed lens's low price point is very compelling.

I have +1 and +2 diopter closeup attachments for my 16mm Angenieux 12-120 zoom. So the short answer is yes it is possible. The question is what optical adapters be available for Scarlet and who will make them? B+W and other filter makers make generic closeup adapters to fit just about any camera. I think Scarlet's front diameter is supposed to be 77mm.

It's interesting all this talk about using attachable lenses on a fixed lens. Why not just get the Cinema version? :sosp: Then you would easily be able to upgrade to other Scarlet brains in the future as well as Epics if you wanted to rent an EPIC brain for a big feature or whatever.

I believe they're referring to lens adapters--aftermarket glass that mounts to the front of a lens in order to convert it to wide-angle, telephoto, macro, anamorphic, or what have you. It's a far less expensive (and viable) solution than multiple lenses and brains.

I hope Red does some of these as I'm sure they'll be really nice.

I hate seeing Z1 docs with wide adapters on when they pan. Looks like a bloody goldfish bowl. :puke:
I worked at a place where they'd actually glued them on!!!! :gun::violent5:

In-fact that distortion is pretty common even with really expensive glass. :beatdeadhorse5:

You would expect some distortion with wide adaptors depending on the angle of view they cover. The same is not necessarily true of macro and tele adapters.
