  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Question: If you have a new MacBook Pro that does NOT have firewire 400...how do I hook up my HDV camara through (Sony Z1u) and Sony (HC1) HDV camcorders? One end is the small tiny firewire 400 plug that goes directly into the camera and the other end of the cable is the larger firewire that normally would go into the computer.

Since the MacBook Pro only has USB and Firewire 800 I was wondering is there an adapter to go from the tiny firewire 400 plug that goes into camera (what's that end called?) to the firewire 800 port?

The small end (plug that goes to camera) is a 4 pin connection. Standard firewire is a 6 pin connection.

4 pin to firewire 800 cable, I've got several.
 
Excellent. Thanks all. I see a bunch of different options now. I assume they all work well. It took a little searching but now I see what its called. Thanks again!
 
Yes get the macbook pro (even better with the 17 inch version - with the Expresscard slot, cause having that E-sata really will do good for time critical or impatient folks). Although you do have to download a driver for certain adapters (like i downloaded the SeriTeck2sm2 )

ONLY THE NEW MACBOOK PROs with 17 INCH SCREENS have the expresscard slot still.
 
Back to the question asked by the original poster... If you're just connecting a firewire camcorder. It's best to use a 9-pin to 4-pin firewire cable. Firewire is backward compatible from FW800 down to FW400.

You will still want a way to connect external storage to capture to in most situations. Current notebook HDD's are plenty fast enough to capture DV, but most of us still prefer something faster, especially if we'll be editing on that system. Once again, this is where the ExpressCard slot comes in handy. Capture over firewire onto an eSATA HDD, or even a RAID and then you have fast storage to work from too.
