  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Addicted to r3d files

Thank you team Red for all that you do! Thank you for your innovation and dedication to deliver products on the "Bleeding Edge". The images you deliver have us all addicted and we can't help but want more and anxiously await the Scarlet and Epic to add to our arsenals. I love your attitude Jim about not being satisfied and "If they won't do it, then I must", be encouraged your camera brought my project and many others to a level never imagined....THANK YOU!!!

But my bet is that NONE of these guys would have done dick if not forced to.

Jim

Uh, oh, look mom, Jim said "dick"! :-)

You know, besides the fact that we don't need to bring in the RED into the conversation as a point of comparison with the 5D, for the RED is truly a far different, and superior, animal, the fact remains that all those people that have actually found the video from the DSLR's to be not only an acceptable but also a revolutionary tool don't really know what a RAW file really is.

I always thought that people with a photography background would appreciate the RED more than those with a videography background, for the former are used to the rigors of developing an image through its many stages, whether it is properly developing it in a dark room with the right chemicals, then wiping it clean, scanning it, spend hours cleaning all hairs and dust particles at 1000% magnification in photoshop, or whether it was the far easier tasks of putting a "flat" looking image through its paces in a RAW developing application, all of that for the final reward of being able to infinitely mold your image to whatever look you wanted, while the latter have always wanted speed, convenience and ready to use images. It is easy then to see why so many old videographers have taken to the 5D video (while they would scoff at little prosumer cameras that actually produce better video) and still not be able to, or not willing to learn how to, extract the best results from the R3D files...and this is NOT aimed at anybody in this thread btw...

In fact... PLEASE! If one of these guys could take over the development of cameras that actually satisfied us, I'd love to step down. This is a lot of work revolutionizing the industry.

I'm surprised you wrote that, changing your ambition for the future?

If the 5D works for you... no problem with me. It just isn't good enough for me. I can't live with the defects. Maybe their next effort will be good enough. It would be great if one of these guys actually nailed it. Then I wouldn't have to work on this stuff. I could retire and shoot not wanting anything.

Jim

GOLD Jim. 100% honest GOLD in that post. Exactly how I feel every time I A: have to make something because nobody else can "nail" it or B: because they charge to much for what it's worth.

he he he ;) rock on ! I can't WAIT for the small RAW cams

trust me guys, I WANT raw in the air. but I can't GET it right now....still playing the "hurry up and wait" game here for a small RAW cam....hint hint... LOL

Well. Red has always said that expect their specs to change. Count on it..

As of now, we know that the low end Scarlet will be a fixed 8X zoom lens with a 2/3" chip for right around $4k. With the popularity of the 5D, I wonder if Red is considering something more flexible to answer that market. I'm talking about the $3,000 market here. Very specific. I'm optimistic Red will give us something we weren't expecting. I just hope they go above and beyond to stay in the front.

2/3” chip is at the high end of the $3000 market. The difference between the fixed and non-fixed is $500, and a “complete kit” is $3750 for fixed so for a body only on a non fixed should be $3250 that’s under 10% of the target. I have made two big assumptions here, first that things don’t change between now and release, (and we know they will but for the moment lets only deal with what we are aware of) and second that the “complete kit” deal will not contain exclusive components or noticeable savings. So I think the calculated error should push it to $3500.

Of course this still only gives you a 2/3” chip but consider this. As an owner of both a Red one and a $3,000 dSLR, if you where to up grade your RED one to a scarlet S35 you would be able to set it up as a dSLR which is now better than your cannon either giving you a spare $3,000 or a scarlet FF35. This won’t work for the average photographer but is grate for us. I don’t know much about dSLR’s as when someone mentions cannon I think of xha1 that has a 1/3” chip, fixed lenses 1k camera that cannon sells at $3999 by which the RED “complete kit” seems staggering good value. Just something to think about.

Considering that the lowest price 2/3" HD camera on the market starts at around $10k for the body only, Scarlet fixed or cinema versions will be a major bargain in a no compromise true digital motion picture camera.

I'm with Obin, I can't wait to have an affordable camera in my hands that shoots high speed motion RAW! I will trade off 35mm dof for 2/3" raw any day.

yea, you hit it. horror show when compared to RED

Heli Pilot for RED costs 15k a day, thats why

No beef! Just curious.
I thought you were pulling a Laforet out the side.

But you know... since you won't be needing bokeh on the heli... consider a little hf10 or the like. Very cheap, very fun.

Church! (Translated: Preach it brother, preach it!)

yea at this point I too would trade DOF any day for RAW..it's just that much of an upgrade from jpg files!

OT: BTW Awesome job on build 20..now colors look as they should on the HDMI and HDSDI!!! wahooo!!! happy happy!

There is NOTHING in the marketplace even REMOTELY close to what RED is offering with the Scarlet models. I mean for $3,800 or so, tell me where you can find a camcorder that records using a 2/3" sensor AND a professional codec like REDCODE...no less RED's reputation for the other components and glass that it will offer. There is nothing close even if you move up to $10,000.

In fact I wonder if it would take cameras above $50,000 to even remotely compete. Now that's a of money for a serious enthusiast to pay for a camera...for for $3,800 or so that is just a slam dunk. NOTHING close.

I agree with Jim...there would be no need for him or RED if the big boys were revolutionizing the camcorder with pro specs and an affordable price, but they aren't even coming close to what RED is offering.

So far at least! And I bet it takes them years to learn this lesson. At that time, RED will have really made a big dent in the marketplace. Thank god!

I REALLY am getting tired of people coming on here just to say how much better cameras are.... the Red One is the best digital cinema camera so far. End of story. I personally believe Red should charge more for its cameras and accessories because I think they deserve it. At this point, Jim is just trying to help us, and then you go and blatantly criticize him and his work? In his own area? Com'on! Get a life!

Who are you addressing exactly? Did someone criticize him personally? Please clarify Mikeyai.
