It's still amazing. I just rented a 5d mark2 for shooting 1080p from a remote helicopter and as good as it is. the footage just does not hold a card to r3d files. I am addicted to r3d, push an r3d black and its clean AND you will find info that you did not know was being recorded, pull the HELL out of the sky, it's clean, can't do any real color work on the 5d footage...wow....one day I guess all cameras will shoot RAW. untill then I have to shoot 5d in the air. bummer.

oh well...wish I had a scarlet. gotta spend 3 days with this and all I will get is mpg compressed footage. it is what it is. nothing more.

yea, you hit it. horror show when compared to RED

Heli Pilot for RED costs 15k a day, thats why

It's a lot worse than that actually! I was just looking at some scenes that were shot both with the 5D and a little Canon HG20 ($500) that shoots AVCHD at 24mbps (the best that format offers) and I was amazed. The HG20 footage was MUCH better to handle, with more color fidelity, less noisy, more "pushable", and all around better than the 5D, and it ended up being used in most of the takes. However nice glass the 5D can use and how much wider than usual you can shoot, the compression that gets applied to its video footage is so TERRIBLE that even a crappy little prosumer camera beats it hands down. I am aghast at the popularity and acceptance the 5D has found, because to me, the video it produces is absolute garbage...

Jesus Obin, where's that at?! I mean, for the past year I've rented a helicopter a few times and ended up paying about a 10% of that for a day, and I was flying a 435 in it...

I'm addicted to a lightweight dSLR that shoots 1080 onto CF cards, has DOF and FF capabilities and costs less than a Red EVF.... That's what I'm addicted to

Does the final image matter to you? Or just what you posted? If line skipping, artifacts and skew don't matter to you... there is an obvious choice for you that is not RED. Good thing there are lots of choices...

Final image for sure matters to me, that's why I shoot with Red for the big important jobs. It's a sacrifice. With the 5D I am sacrificing the final image but gaining in other areas. Like having an ultra lightweight, fast, inconspicuous 1080 capable video camera with DOF properties. I can't wait to see what you guys pour out with the Scarlet/Epic fiasco. For the time being, the 5D is satisfying my covert, lightweight needs... You're exactly right though Jim. Good thing there are a lot of choices. What a world we live in. And to add, by no means am I trying to disrespect Red in anyway with my recent 5D praises. I just really love this little camera and I really love my Red camera. It's funny to me when people come on the forums and SLAM the 5D to pieces as if were any threat to the Red market. As a filmmaker, I welcome the 5D! It's another awesome tool in my arsenal of imagemaking!

"Fiasco?"

What fiasco would that be? I welcome the fact that Red is taking its time to get it right with Scarlet and Epic. My own view is that Red should resist pressure to bring stuff out to the market too early.

As for the 5D, having purchased and sold several half baked heavily compressed video solutions in the past, I have vowed never to make that mistake again.

If the 5D works for you... no problem with me. It just isn't good enough for me. I can't live with the defects. Maybe their next effort will be good enough. It would be great if one of these guys actually nailed it. Then I wouldn't have to work on this stuff. I could retire and shoot not wanting anything.

Jim

In fact... PLEASE! If one of these guys could take over the development of cameras that actually satisfied us, I'd love to step down. This is a lot of work revolutionizing the industry. But my bet is that NONE of these guys would have done dick if not forced to. I could be wrong... :-)

I agree Jim. Ideally, what I'd like to see in this life is a Canon 5D but with a Red label on the front, shooting 1080P FF-35 RAW Redcode. Small batteries. A little swivel LCD screen with the option to add a bigger one or a BombEVF. But ideally, I'd like a Red 5D that cost less than the Canon. You guys probably can't do it right now but I know I'll get my wish soon as tech keeps getting better and better.

Well. Red has always said that expect their specs to change. Count on it..

As of now, we know that the low end Scarlet will be a fixed 8X zoom lens with a 2/3" chip for right around $4k. With the popularity of the 5D, I wonder if Red is considering something more flexible to answer that market. I'm talking about the $3,000 market here. Very specific. I'm optimistic Red will give us something we weren't expecting. I just hope they go above and beyond to stay in the front.

Richard... there will never be a RED camera that shoots RAW cheaper than a Canon camera that line skips and shoots AVCHD or H.264. If those are OK with you, we are the wrong supplier for you.

Developing a high speed sensor is much different than extracting from a slow speed sensor. Easy stuff to understand.

And we THANK you and the RED team everyday for all your hard work; thanks for putting on the FORCE!

I do wonder if the 5D and the D90 came to the surface because of what Red is doing...

These cameras are just the latest extension of Nikon and Canon long term marketing plans. The point and shoot models that make up 85% of their market have had video capability for years. HD point and shoot models are becoming commonplace. I don't think they had any form of serious production in mind when they released these and that they have been surprised by the response.

It would still be ok to spend 10'000$ - 15'000$ to buy a tool that has the capability of a 5D with even 400gr. heavier body. There is a market that was seen by RED 6 month ago and that made Canon's 5D success.

Scarlet should not be a "my first Sony" type of tool but a high quality motion picture tool that would be in the entry level of RED's arsenal.

I finished a 5D short film that looks great. I used the tool for his capabilities and artefacts to tell a story. It certainly is a pitfall to have a tool that can not be used in the majority of projects.

Now let's give us pacience and wait... Can we do something else?

RED is the only one (a pity for us) in this industry that wants to take this revolutionnary approach.

God forgive me! But I’ve got to put my two cents into this conversation; haven’t the Red Team continue to advance the R1 to the point that “you all’ are about to install Build 20 (Version 20.1) into a camera that you bought more than a year ago? I would call that “Continuing Progress”, and haven’t they promised to continue to do so way into the Future! Then when it was ready for distribution they send out a Beta Version, to see if they forgot something, and they did, now you have RA 3.72B. So we don’t know what the final release version will be, but it will be great! I ask what other company does that? While working on the next few generations of the Red Camera: S35, FF35, 645, and the 617. Just my two cents for whatever they are worth!
