Hi all, This is my first post although have been looking for some time. I have a question that has been giving me quite a headache. When I import Medium Red Proxies into final cut to work with them and move them into the timeline they appear as needing to be rendered. (orange or red above clips). I find this frustrating and I keep being told that you shouldn't need to render red proxies in Final Cut but alas I have no choice but to eat 4-5 hour render times. Perhaps I was misinformed about proxies not needing to be rendered but if their is a way around this I would be very grateful. Thank in advance for the help.

Thomas, make sure RT Extreme is on in the sequence. To be honest though, you're really better off just rendering dailies at 1/4 res debayer for offline and doing a conform later.

In your timeline select "unlimited RT" - located top left of timeline...picture attached. The red bar above your timeline will change to orange. You can then play the sequence in real time.

Wow thanks for the quick replies. Unlimited RT is selected and even when the the bar above my timeline is orange I still can't view dailies in realtime. What we are trying to do is import red proxies into FC to sync and then create a dailies reel which we can screen in a timely manner. After dailies have screened we do a one light in Redcine and bake out to ProRes for editorial. We then reconnect media using the Pro Res instead of the Proxies for the duration of Editorial. I hope this makes sense and thanks for the help so far. It's just strange because I have never had to render the orange before and I'm wondering if I'm missing something or if there's a better way. Thanks.

Set the Playback Video Quality (in the same timeline pulldown as RT) to something other than High.

Thomas,
Also make sure your sequence settings are correct...REDCODE codec, etc. Sorry if this was obvious, but I know I've forgotten and caused myself some issues more than a few times.
Peace,

You don't need to render the proxies - to edit. Outputting is another story.

There is no short cut (without professional post house hardware/software), either you have to render the proxies or transcode the R3d's.

Ignore the proxies and use RedRushes to batch transcode the R3D's to an offline resolution, for instance 720, quarter res, ProRes (not HQ). On a 3ghz 8-core MacPro this goes around 10 frames a second. Yes it takes a long time and eats up drive space (but then so does rendering), but the tradeoff is no rendering, full framerate playback, and the transcodes are independent of the R3D's.
