I can't wait to test it. We have the same ones in PC's and they kick ass. I hope Apple got their drivers right this time because 8800's were slower than PC versions.

My replacement Mac Pro should be here friday or monday and it will include the ATI 4870. I've ordered the GTX 285 as well and will do some comparison testing as I set the system up.

I would be curious to know if the Apple driver set supports SLI with two GTX 285 cards. I do know that the cards require the 64bit EFI and only work in the early '08 Mac Pro and the current Nehalem models.

compatible with snow leopard open cl?

compatible with snow leopard open cl?

does anyone know about snow leopard and open cl gpu hardware requirements? this card is not listed here so does that mean it will not get speed benefits of snow leopard / open cl?

I am very interested to see your testing results. I am still on the stock ATI 2600 in my early '08 3.2 GHz. Mac Pro.

I was hoping for a GPU with DisplayPort output. But now I'm thinking about going out the RED Rocket's HDMI breakout box in order to use the Dreamcolor's 10-bit engine.

I guess I'll just use my 30" ACD via dual-link DVI from the GTX 285 as the main display.

OpenCl should work starting from Nvidia 8800 and Ati 4870, so GTX 285 is pretty much there.

It will benefit, it's just the card is new and hasn't made it into Apple's standard configuration options yet. It will be supported by OpenCL and CUDA.

@ Curran: Everyone wants to use DisplayPort with their DreamColor. Does the DreamColor not accept 10bit input over DVI or something?

All GeForce cards from 8800 and above fully support OpenCL, while ATI 3000 series supports OpenCL, but only 4000 series come with a key feature for GPGPU software, e.g. OpenCL and OpenCL applications. OpenCL will work on Radeon 3000 series, but don't expect stellar performance.

The GTX285 board is spankin' new in world of Macs and actually is the best way to put two 30" Cinema HD displays. Two native dual-link DVI connectors, both are 10-bit. Not sure about the Apple version, but the card should support 10-bit output by using a converter HDMI 1.3-DVI cable. I got the 10-bit output from a EVGA's GTX285 card to an LCDTV by using a Hiper DVI-HDMI cable and the input was detected as HDMI 1.3.

Will check the SLI option once our GTX 285 boards arrive at the Labs.:sifone:

No, it does not. It does accept 10bit input over HDMI though. A good excuse to get the RED Rocket breakout box....

Considering the price of the breakout box, I'd sell the DreamColor and get a 42" Panny 11-series with SDI input. It would be better and cheaper, but that's just me.

I've had my GTX 285 sitting here since monday morning. No new Mac Pro to put it in just yet. However, initial reports are that the drives sucketh mightily. There seem to be issues with adaptive clocking and the card not ramping up the core clock when needed (driver issue). No 10bit output enabled. When the drivers do cooperate, the card is a screamer and noticeably faster for Motion, CS4, Maya, games, etc.. vs. the ATI 4870.

The guys at EVGA are still tweaking drivers... I'll do my own testing once the new system arrives.
