New RED Color Science - Test Pilot Feedback Thread

Thanks Colin - that's a lot smoother in the new version.

Wow, what an improvement! Good Job Jim, Graeme and Stuart!!!!

I shoot a lot of skin care commercials, so my focus was on skintones.

My major observations are:

1. The New Red Alert dose a much better job of rendering skin tones. It works with both RedSpace and REC709. Below is a screen grab of the new alpha and the older RedAlert programs running at the same time, side by side, looking at the same frame. I did no adjustments in RA just straight up side by side. I tested the camera in RedSpace and REC709, both reacted the same way to the improvements. Everything was lit with tungsten light. The white ballance was the camrea's preset tungsten.

The left image is the older release Red Alert (3.48) and the right is the new Alpha Red Alert (3.72). You can see the lips are not a purple and the skin is not blotchy. The color of the skin is also very nice, kinda bronzy.

2. The new camera firmware is even better for me because it dose pretty much the same thing but on the on-screen monitors!!!! I have had many problems with the make-up dept. and clients going into a tailspin because the skin looks blotchy on the on-set monitors. Now this issue is behind me!

Below are 2 stills that I took with my DSLR camera of one of my onset monitors shooting these tests. The DSLR and the monitors were on the exact settings for both shots the only change was the RedOne's firmware. The Reds were configured the same except for the firmware. As you can see the skin is way smoother and the lips are not going purple!

I will do more testing of white balance tonight and I have some Green screen I tested, more later....

Jolly good show Fellas!!!!

New Color Science

Thanks for the illustrations Rich. Really glad to hear you are liking the visual results.

And thanks also for the credit, but I only helped here with the software distribution....

More tungsten tests coming tomorow...

Now I can offer a bit of daylight tests... macro....

Shot on R1 with Leica Macro Elmarit-R 60mm f/2.8 @ 8 and a bit "underexposed"...

to "recover" at different ISO in beta RA 3.7.2 you'll get... just follow the images and downloads below...

Choose your best example then you can get at one of the following 4K JPEG file to download...

Sharper Debayering?

Sharper Debayering?

I noticed in some of the comparison shots that the images from
the alpha build v.18.3.7.2 look somewhat sharper compared to older builds.
Perhaps a side effect from better debayering? Is this accurate?

Whatever happened to posting images in a size that won't force those of us reading in a laptop to desperately scroll right to see the enormous frames you guys are posting?

Please...

Guys,

I just moved this past weekend. I'll load up the new build tomorrow and then I will post a few results. I am curious to see the results on offspeed shots under tungsten where the noise floor can be really challenged.

Answer: :head_explode:

But we are looking at pixels here, its hard to do with small images, like the previous question about debayering.

Yes, it should help all footage ever shot on a RED. Indeed, I bet if I doug up some old frankie footage, it would help that too. Yes, this is one of the key benefits of recording REDCODE RAW.

Graeme

That would be a pretty interesting comparison actually... Any chance of seeing some stills?

I'm working with some B17 footage that I shot greatly under exposed (2 stops+) and have re-processed it with the new RA color science and am now running it through the new NeatVideo NR plug in for FCP (10bit). This new color science makes the Neatvideo plug in much more effective. I'm still testing but we may have our 5DMII killer already!

It is looking great. I am super stoked. This makes my world so much better! I am dead serious!

Thanks again Boys! (Jim, I have one of Fidel's finest with your name on it for this one)

Prost,

Wow, this thread just keeps getting better and better.

I have some low light stuff from a music video I shot in October that I'll be running through this new color science as soon as possible, that's for sure.

I did some tests showing four combination of old and new Red Alert and camera firmware. These are just the blue channel. In each case, the new Red Alert reduces noise. A lot of the test shots here seem to compare Build 18 RA 3.72b with Build 18 RA 3.6. Shouldn't we be comparing Build 18 RA 3.72b with Build 17 RA 3.6?

It's worth noting that the newer firmware selected a white balance about 600K lower than the old firmware and still reduced noise.
