  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RPP Update

We are listening.. we don't mean to disrupt the planetary metric powers at be.

If you guys are really passionate about this.. we can change this as a running change as not to cause delay for the people that don't mind or prefer it, so the first 100 sets or so will have the large MM, the little mm's can run into production after that.

Deal?

Deal!

I also don,t mind moving up in line and taking the capitalized MMs.
Just taking one for the team...

Also, does this mean there are 100 sets made or almost made already?

This thread is absurd.

I wouldn't complain if the lenses said CENTIMETER on the side.

This is a company that offers full trade-in value towards a new camera in exchange for their old one and where you get midnight responses from the owner of the company when you post online about your problems. Stop hassling them or they may decide to adopt the Sony/Canon/Nikon/etc policy of hanging up the phone laughing when people call about absurd things like capitalization on a lens barrel. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

Yeah. IMHO it's fine if they address it in future shipments but let's not get caught up in it. This is the age of texting. yr lky & gr8 if they spl anythg rt

This is not absurd at all. In Metric world this is typo. Wrong spelling. You might not think so but it is. I think just 85,100 and etc. will be suffice.

More important issue is visual ergonomics. from the photo I can see marking is on top part of lens barrel. Meaning if you want to check focal length of the lens you are using you have to look down from the top of the camera (which might be obscured by rails and LCD support arm and etc.) Red should put focal length marking on side of the lens barrel.
Zeiss Master Prime marking is very large font on their side of barrel and same eye level as focusing scale and F stop scale. You can tell from distance what lens you are using on your camera very easily. It's well thought out good ergonomics.
Red might re consider position and font size for better on this opportunity.

Since you are changing focal length marking anyway you might re consider position and font size for better ergonomics.

Mistake is always opportunity for improvement.

Well said. In my first post on this thread I said there's no need to make it so specific. But if you're gonna do it, then it must follow spelling convention...but, as you say Shin, it is kinda geeky.

Japanese were notorious on wrong spelling on their camera owner's manuals. They always mixed up Ls and Rs.
On the eve of General Election, Japanese Prime Minister says to his cabinet member
"jentorumen, good ruck on your erection tomorrow!"
Still Japan produced fantastic cameras and lenses. Those cameras went "Crick" when shutter was released.
Everything I hear about Red Prime is fantastic. You can write anything on it. But might as well go for perfection.

Agree. And I like yellow/bright green engravings for dark sets. Red is damned hard to read in low light. I like the additions to the scales - looks like additional marks for both iris and focus were added.

First of all - great that you can fix the MM -> mm problem with the later run. I really appreciate it.
But while you are concidering layout changes - is it possible to make the full T-stop marks larger than the 1/3 and 2/3 ones? They are the same size on the current design and it could be difficult to read at lowlight or at a medium distance.

Thanks for listening even to small approvements when the production started! Kind of reminds me of the missing focus mark of the first Red One bodies. Thanks!

But if you're gonna do it, then it must follow spelling convention...

Actually.. we really don't NEED to do anything..

We could choose to put "MMM" on there if we want, choose to piss-off the Metric people ( less than 7% of our market btw ) and choose to just say "like it or leave it..."

So take that into context guys before you guys get too pushy.. we listen, we change, we are pretty open about this stuff. Some things we do might not make sense to people, some things are mistakes, some things are just done because we like the way it looks... thats the choice we get to make.

Does this mean that the RPP's with MM will become cherished collectors items?

Does this mean that the RPP's with MM will become cherished collectors items?

Yup.. and the ones that don't have them at all ( Offhollywood has the only public set ) are even more valuable :)

This thread is nuts. People are complaining about "MM" vs. "mm"? WTF?

Metric people ( less than 7% of our market btw )

This is surprising, as (according to wikipedia) metric is "the official system of measurement for all nations except for Myanmar, Liberia, and the United States."
Not trying to be a pedant, just surprised :)

And I'll gladly take an MM set btw...

You would think... but the numbers don't lie...

The Metric guys might yell 95% louder than the imperial guys (which is usually the case with a minority) , but in this industry, Imperial is winning.. by a very, very, very long margin. Even though Metric (I believe) is a better system.

The metric system is a hell of alot easier to understand than the imperial system.. Hell I'm from Canada remember, a metric country that still depends on Imperial for day to day dialogue. If someone tells me something is 3 meters away, I convert it to Feet in my head automatically to visualize. And if you walk down the street in Canada, and ask someone how tall they are, ( trust me I used to get that one every day ) if you respond in centimeters most people give you a blank stare.

I am not sure why metric hasn't really made it to the US.. maybe they thought about it for a second.. but then had discussions with the Metric council about things like this thread and it turned into this thread that made the US run, run very far away :)

But.. We like those guys.. which is why we offer all our lenses in both markings. We know what it's like to be an underdog. Just remember when your an underdog and someone throws you a bone, its a bad idea to bite thier hand.

As long it's not in angstroms or lightyear, i'm happy.

That's it. I vote to have them re-labeled in Angstroms. "...can someone grab the 850,000,000 out of the case?"
