ARRI has officially released their new 6x6 compact mattebox, the MB28. It is similar to the MB20-II in design, and is far more compact, lightweight and less expensive than the supermax MB14. The MB28 features three rotating 6.6x6.6 trays (the two front trays rotate together, the rear rotates independently), top and side flags, swingaway arm for 19mm or 15mm studio rods and full clearnce on even the Optimo 24-290.

Abel is offering a special introductory bundle package deal. See more information here:

http://www.abelcine.com/store/product.php?productid=1001460&cat=880&page=1

Also, a reminder: The Abel/ARRI Group Buy special on a three-stage MB20-II kit expires at the end of June. After than the price will return to its normal rate, which is more than $1000 higher. This is an excellent deal and anyone interested should contact an Abel Sales rep. soon to get a quote.

Mitch
Looks to me like it's the only Matte box you'll ever need.
What is the special introductory bundle package price, checked the site, but it's not listed.
I am sure it's not a secret:)

I do not know pricing and there are various reasons we do not publish prices, some of which are contractual. If you'd like a quote you can contact an Abel Sales rep or PM me with your email contact and I'll ask someone to get back to you.

The MB28 is the "only mattebox you'll ever need," but only if you're planning to use the big lenses and if you're willing to spend the money. It's a great deal and certainly less expensive than the MB14, but it is considerably more than a smaller mattebox such as the MB20-II. I think it's fantastic, but it certainly isn't for everyone.

Is there a way to fit 5.65"x5.65" filters? What about a 138mm round? What if I wanted to use 15mm Studio or 15mm Lightweight rod support?

The Arri configurator doesn't include the MB28. If anyone has answers to any of these questions and could possibly provide part #'s, I would appreciate it very much.

I know there are insert trays for 4x5.65 and I'm pretty sure for 5.65x5.65, possibly even a combo. Will have to check about 138mm round, but I do know that there are rear adapter rings for the MB14 that can then hold a 138mm and the MB28 will take these as well since it has the same rear ring. There is a support arm (what Arri calls a Console) for 15mm studio as well as 19mm studio. No way on lightweight 15mm -- that would be inside the filter on a 6.6x6.6.

If you'd like to get part numbers and a quote, please contact me directly and I'll ask a Sales Rep. to get back to you. We can configure a kit to your needs.

Hello Curran,

The 5.65" x 5.65" filter frames for the MB-28 or MB-14 are part # K2.66063.0.

The snap-in reducer ring for MB28 allowing for the use of MB-20 138mm bellows rings is part # K2.66033.0

The 15mm Studio support arm is part # K2.66028.0 Although it is very compact for a 6.6" x 6.6" mattebox it really is too large to supported by 15mm LWS rods.

Offhollywood did a great blog on the beta unit here:

Nice thing about those 4x5.65 trays is that they are inserts into the 6.6"x6.6" trays. Very convenient.

I've asked for someone to reach out to you.

It is a great mattebox.

Wow, talk about customer service, James form Abel just called me up following an email he had sent just minutes before, love it, thanks again Mitch!!

Btw, I also asked James to hook me up with also a full ARRI wireless Focus system and a DVF, so Mitch aI would love if you could make sure He loos up for the best there is out there, and make sure that the ARRI system is a complete solution, as it is what I will be suing on my main EPIC-X.

Hi Ketch, besides the larger size, do you mind saying what about it you like so much more than the MB 20II?
Cheers,
Paul

The MB-28 and MB-20II are more similar then different, yet the MB-28, is an other MB all together, the simple fact that now you can have the 6x6 filters with the larger Round for the huge Optimo 24-290, a lens I love and will be using a lot on my projects in Italy, and then just simply trow in the Pana size filter tray inserts, and use the 4x5.65 is just great to me, no longer carrying multiple MB's per camera.

It is larger then the MB-20II yes but not much, and remember that uses the same flags and some other accessories as the MB-20II.

Build quality is to me some how improved over the MB-20II, yet stronger, the finish seems also a little better, more refined.

But ultimately, it is the fact of having an all in one MB that really makes this the one and only.

Awesome, thanks for that feedback Ketch, its very helpful information!

Most welcome Paul, fact is that the MB 20II, even so expensive, and the MB28 is even more expensive, was already an exceptional MB, the MB 28, just made a great MB series, kind of fall all in to one, could not have asked for something better.

Hey Ketch, I posted about Director's VF on that thread.

Glad you like the MB-28 so much. It came from a lot of feedback from users on what they wanted in a design and it is essentially a streamlined MB-20II bumped up in size to do much of the work of an MB-14 without the bulk.

He he, I could have been one of those giving the feed back, as I have been a really Pain in the A$#@! about it, just that with the new swing away module, is beautiful how fast you can now change Focal, but still remained a Pain when you wanted to put in a bigger lens, a wide angle lens, or anything that required a bigger Opening for the lens front element it self, and or simply the need of a 6x6 filter to avoid vignetting, and have to change to a completely different MB made it a true Pain on set, now enter the MB 28 which answered this issue and all my request and then some, so great Job, ARRI.

Heading to the DVF post now..
