  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Another idea for epic:

This one is pretty straight forward. At least to explain.
Three more curves in Redcode Metadata. RGB.

Why? To put some more control back into the hands of the guy/gal with his/her eye on the eyepiece.

Yes! I would love to see separate R,G and B curves along with the master gamma curve, both in camera and replicated on the software side in Redcine, RedAlert, Adobe plugin etc. The software side's ability to record the look and upload it to camera would be nice too.... I know it's on the way but separate R,G,B would be a fantastic addition!

Great idea Ian!

This would help quiet a few more complaints about the cameras, even though it can be done in post, if it's all metadata and you know what you're doing, then it would be great to have that much control in camera as well.

Especially with the published FF1080p RGB modes.

I concur...especially because a lot of stuff I shoot ends up needing to turn around pretty quickly, so even if shooting RAW, the ability to process and output a finished image without feeling like I have to tweak something before render would be really nice.

I find the RedOne already too complicated.

The best addition in software updates was the RAW-View. Personally I use RAW-View all the time. It gives you an excellent clou what the camera sees. It's not "vibrant" and colours are muted but at least it maps the sensor closest.

I would appreciate a debayer setting in the SDK that does not need additional tweaking shot by shot. By now I have to set the cameras metadata to 250 ASA and 5000 Kelvin if I want the sensor beeing represented best when using the camera's matadata for debayering.

Personally I find "painting" the camera on set error-prone and too time consuming. I find simplicity much more desirable.

3 gammas

3 gammas

I think what is more useful is to have three gamma curves, in my CC's levels 1 and 2 you can link the three gamma curves when you want "master" and unlink their adjustment when you want to adjust one a little up and down. In link they do not reset, but just all change together so you keep the color balance or off-balance and make the mid-tones go brighter or dimmer keeping the tint or lack there of.

I did a lot of testing and found the way I have things setup makes it easer (for me at least) to correct the color from just about any source.

I the meta data you need, black clip, white clip, gamma for RGB, so 9 values.

I also have RGB curves, but those come after the clips and gammas.

Adjusting the three gammas is a good way to correct the color balance more than just K value, and you can add any tint to mid-tones without changing the black being black or the white being white. The 6 clip points let you get black black and white white.

Well... after shooting on Red I never want to shoot anything but a Raw format. But... after shooting on Red I've learned that lots of people would like to put their fingers in the color correction pie that has in the past been reserved for just the DOP and colorist.

People also get used to the look they are editing with and don't like to change it. So I've learned to set a look in the camera shoot for that look and also monitor what I'm recording raw so that I have "good" exposures. I'd also rather not bring a paint box on set for the HDMI signal.

So, I agree with you in a way. Simplicity is great. But we already have metadata and looks so a bit more useful metadata isn't really a problem I hope.

The need for this technology is actually more political than technological.

Well as long as it's not baked in I don't see toooo much of a problem with this. Not something I'm keen on personally and I wouldn't waste my time doing this on set. But that's just me though.

Would like to load these additional metadata setups onto the camera from an SD card or Laptop to be able to quickly match the look outputs of multiple cameras.
