  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey REDusers-
So I've found about three or four pilots on this board today, and I've got this hunch that there are more of us. So let's chat about the wild blue yonder, why don't we. If you all are anything like me, next to cinematography, flying is the thing I just can't get enough of. Any good aerial photo/cinematography you want to share?
Personally, I'm a PP/SEL as of June 26, 2008. Anyway, let us know if you're one of us!

I chose to respond here rather than in the other thread to try to keep things on topic :beer:

I'm a PP SEL IA, and have owned several Bonanza's. My favorite was the first B36TC to be turbonomalized. There was big spread on it in AOPA a couple of years back. Gami's marketing materials have some pictures of her.

She had to go when my eldest got accepted to Cornell, but I still have an original 36. I haven't been in her in over a year however, and while my eldest graduated last week, I have two more in the que...

Probably time for that one to go as well.

This man can only afford one expensive avocation. There is an advantage to owning and racing airplanes... even Red looks cheap by comparison. :thumbsup:

I am currently working with a Helicopter pilot on shooting stock footage with the RED camera.
Is there anything you are looking to do or would like to shoot?
 
Hi guys,

adding my name to the ranks here! I was a pilot for many years, learnt to fly in the Royal Australian Air Force before moving to civvie life and joining Airlines PNG (that's Papua New Guinea).

Got retrenched with a bunch of other pilots after 9/11 because the passenger market went into a tailspin worldwide.

Since then I've only flown for fun, but I still miss thrashing an aircraft to the edge of its envelope (and beyond occasionally!). It's no fun if you aren't inverted and/or in the weeds.... :cool:

That sounds awesome. One of my pop's business partner's back in DC just bought a 1/4 share of a 36, so I'm gonna have to do some finagling when I get back from school to try to get a little stick time in that! I'd love to own my own bird some day, but since I'm only 20, and a Scarlet is a bit more possible right now, I think the plane will wait for about 30 years :beer:

Hehehe...you're having way too much fun, Paul...exactly how it should be in a plane :cool: I've yet to do any acro, but the more I think about it the more interesting it sounds. Here in the States, you don't even have to do spins anymore for the license...oh well. 0G pushovers though...oh yes...my favorite. What's that straight-tail trainer in your last picture? Looks fun.

So anyway ladies and gentlemen...when and where is our first annual REDuser fly-in? :)

I'm fixed wing CPL multi-IFR. I haven't touched a plane in over 10 years :(
It was the most fun I've had in my life though. One of these days I should go back to school and go for a helicopter license :)

Life's too short not to! I'd really like to do it too at some point, and of course throw a camera mount on my chopper :cool: CP/AMEL-IA...were you actually flying commercially, or just for fun?

Percy...you've got it covered my man! Getting typed in the Jet Ranger must have been a blast. Have you got your glider rating? Then you'd basically have it all!

But I only have about 6 hours of flight time--although I flew enough flight simulators for a decade I managed to take off and land in the first 40 minutes which is of course the easy part compared to navigating and legally staying in approach traffic. I would love to get around to picking up my recreational license but it's kind of spendy considering I don't really have access to a plane. I have a friend going for his instructor's license... just as soon as I can get lessons on the cheap I'll probably suck it up and get official.

Please do get back to it! You won't be sorry...I promise! Esepcially with a buddy CFI and these new LSA (Light Sport Aircrafts) that are renting as low as $50/hr some places and only sip about 4 gph, that Sport Pilot Certificate is ripe for the picking!

That's the PC-9/A built by Pilatus. It's capable of 320kts at sea level and Mach 0.68 at altitude, +7G for some crazy aerobatics :thumbsup: We used to outperform the older MB326 Macchi jet trainers no problem in almost every way besides straight line speed. It has a Pratt & Whitney PT-6 turboprop engine capable of 1150hp strapped to a fuselage weighing only 2,250kg so you can imagine the performance it's capable of.....

The USAF actually uses a derivative of this called the T-6A Texan II with a slightly redesigned canopy for supposedly better birdstrike protection:

I have around 2000hrs of flying all up, 95% in turboprops with a few hours in Cessnas and small twins.

Awesome Paul. Did the Beech 1900 you flew have PT-6s also like the King Air? Cause that'd be some serious powerplant loyalty! Have you been able to fly anymore at all?

It sure did, slightly more horsepower than the PC-9/A and two of 'em :)

The PT-6 engine family rocked, plus it was nice having the propeller physically separate from the main drive shaft of the turbine, unlike some competitor engines. It meant no risk of bent shafts, vibration was minimised etc. Great design and you can call me a loyal fan!

Haven't flown in a while sadly but no doubt I'd pick it up like I never left.... like riding a bike after the stuff I've seen from the cockpit!
