  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Final Cut Studio 3 not coming at WWDC...

Hmmm... My FCP *almost* never crashes. Maybe once every week or two.

My Adobe CS4 is still quite buggy. It doesn't crash on me very often, but I have issues with existing bugs, that hopefully Adobe is addressing. Premiere CS4 probably crashes once every couple days of use. AE CS4 hasn't crashed on me yet. But the bugs and incompleteness of both apps can really drive a person nuts, especially with current RED workflow issues. I'm really looking forward to the update that Obin has talked about here on the forums - should be available soon.

Adobe Encore is indeed klunky and buggy. I much prefer DVDSP. But DVDSP is essentially a dead solution to me here at the moment because I can't properly author Blu-Ray with it.

As for other Adobe bundled apps... SoundBooth is OK, but I prefer Sound Forge and other options out there, but it's great how SB integrates with the other Adobe apps.

Adobe Media Encoder blows. It would be great if it didn't crash constantly or produce unplayable garbage.

Adobe Media Player is a great idea, but poor execution with a cumbersome and bloated interface.

Usually at the moment you don't want it to, and usually just before you realize you hadn't saved your project in the last half hour.

Seriously, Final Cut has "unexpected failures" on nearly every machine I've ever seen. It is very intolerant of certain file formats, and almost as intolerant of an operator who does too many things too quickly. It is prone to crashing when you drag a timeline too quickly on higher resolution material, and will almost never recover once a project is corrupted - and there's usually no way of determining how the corruption happened in the first place. I'm not saying it's fragile, or any more fragile than most other desktop software. In general, it's reasonably solid, especially when you baby it. But to say it never crashes is to live in an alternate universe in which that might be possible. But in this one, it's not the case.

Of course, it wouldn't work any other way. :beer: I wasn't trying to praise FCP -- I think it's badly in need of a serious update and fixing and, well, I could make an extensive list of what it "needs". Far from perfect and it's not my NLE of choice these days.

I don't know if I'd agree it's as unstable as you're making it out to be. Yes, on some systems it is, but I can push it pretty hard and don't experience some of the crashes you're talking about unless I'm working on an under-powered system for what I'm trying to do. My G5 quads and Mac Pros chew through most formats I throw at them and regularly in 2K / 1080p resolution. Some operations are guaranteed to crash, but most of those are known quantities and work-arounds exist to just become part of the accepted workflow... Not that this makes the bugs acceptable, just tolerable.

Stable

Stable

Just wanted to let you know that not all FCP systems crash so often...
I agree with Jeff, FCP crashes every week or two, not more. Yet, i cannot remember the last time it did... My systems handles various video almost every day, from DV to RED.
Actually, I believe Motion has the crash bug... i would say FCP is pretty stable for the amount of time it is actually making movies, and for the amount of formats we throw at it.
I do not use CS4, but it sounds like it needs a bug overhaul...

It depends on the specs of your computer, the format and how you use it. If FCP can keep up with what you are doing, it will almost never crash. So if you're cutting DV with no filters, it will keep going forever. But HD and motion graphics will cause crashes if FCP cannot render them quickly enough. I stopped embedding Motion projects because of this - I now render them out as QuickTimes.

Here's what I'd like to see:
* OpenCL and Grand Central support (or just general speed increases)
* Improved stability
* Rewrite Compressor and Qmaster so they are significantly more reliable
* Blu-ray support in DVDSP
* Automatic transcription in FCP (this could be very powerful if linked with FC Server)
* Better keyframe controls in FCP (e.g. more options for smoothing)
* XML project files (reduces the impact of corruption, easier for third-party developers to modify and you could easily exchange them with someone who has an earlier version of FCP)
* Improved developer APIs
* Rewrite Color so that it can cope with a larger range of formats, effects, etc

If I could only choose two, it would be the first two.

Jon, nice list of wanted features.
I would add that i love the roundtrip to Motion and back, and use it quite often. But, when compositing big, complicated, HD comps, i always render out from Motion. You cannot play those embedded Motion projects anyway, without a timeline render...
I have recently completed a music video [link], composited entirely in Motion.
The green screen foreground was edited first. After the picture was locked, i prepared the timeline for the various comps, duplicated the sequence, and sent the shots to Motion. I find this workflow the fastest for this type of work.
The workflow will get better. We'll have to be patient and wait until the next OSX, along with FCS3.

I had clients who thought they needed Blu-Ray but I gave them some WD TV units and they use those to playback HD on LCD screens.

My only hope for FCP3 is they fix the multicam bug that keeps it from creating an EDL or XML to send to Color.

If they did that I would be 100% happy.
