Hi Guys,
Finally got tired of waiting for the new Scarlet and we're going to buy the Red One. Can anyone tell me ballpark how long 1 red brick will last? I've rented them before and only got about an hour of shooting but they were heavily used. Is there any advantage (other than size) by going to the 7" LCD over the 5.6? How dependable is the red drive? Is it better to just stick with the CF cards? Finally, the rental we've used was on a mitchell mount, are there other mounting options? One more question, do any of you guys know if all the red one accessories (other than glass) is in stock?
Thanks a bunch for taking the time to help a new red user out.

Joe, I think an hour is realistic when you're running EVF, LCD, Red Drive, etc... I've found the Red Drive reliable -- obviously except under extreme vibrations or movements -- but depending on whether you need the longer run times and are going to invest in the kind of pricey 16 gig cards, features have been shot on the 8 gig cards -- and the Lexars are a bargain now. I would try to minimize investment in Red One centric accessories if you plan on upgrading. Unless budget is not a consideration.

Thanks Rod. Budget is definitely a consideration. That's the whole reason for the purchase. The weekly rental fees plus shipping is just plain killing us. We've been extremely fortunate to have enough production in to justify the investment. Good to hear that the drives are reliable. I didn't know about the Lexars. I'll have to search the posts about them. Pity about the battery life though. Can you run other v-mount batteries on the red? I thought I read somewhere the you couldn't. Anyway, thanks a bunch for the reply.

You can, however:

a) You won't get a remaining-power indicator (except from the new Switronix ones Mitch from Abel Cine just announced)

b) the RED BRICK batteries are the second-highest capacity Li-Ion bricks around, after the 190Wh monsters that are around. The camera is just power-hungry, that's all.

And if you're not running a RED DRIVE, you can expect 80-90 minutes of power from a brick.

really think about the accessories

really think about the accessories

Since you've rented, you probably know the deal, mostly.

Don't get the 5 inch, go for the 7, readabilty and off axis viewing seems better, maybe someone that owns the 7 inch can back that up. I don't like the 5.

You just need names (companies) of what to buy... and not WHAT to buy.

I wish I had rented before I bought; cause I would have outfitted my RED a bit different.

There was a "RED set up" thread here that jumped up to the top in one of the sections recently. It had a lot of good pictures of people's RED set ups and talked about what they bought and why.

Would have helped me out a lot, I suggest taking a look at it.

Everything from ENG guys to indies it seemed were posting (sorry to tired to find the thread... I am writing this as I am about to go to sleep).

Maybe some else will post it before I wake tommorrow if not I will look for it.

Good luck.

Lexar cards won´t work in 4K on cameras with Build 17 or 18 on it, and the new CF Reader in the camera (which are installed when you purchase now) they only are able to record on 2K afaik.

In terms of battery, there are other options also available like SWIT (different then SWITRONIC) with 160Wh giving you about 2 hours of runtime and are safe for air travel (batteries are able to split in two parts)

If you go for the Viewfactorstudios Origo Button, you wont miss the communication between battery and Camera, the Origo gives a good enough indication when it´s time to change.

You can run any V-Mount Battery arround, but i wouldn´t use batteries below 80Wh, cause runtime would be really short.

The 7" LCD is a great choice, its a lot better than the 5,6" in terms of viewing angle. If you can aford it, go for it.

I don't blame you for cracking and getting the Red! The Red is incredible! I wouldn't wait either...
