There has been FUD posted about RPP's and UO prime sets being the same
lenses, even though both companies have posted that they are different
designs.

In an effort to give both companies full credit for their respective
designs, I asked UO if we could X-ray each to clearly show the
differences once and for all.

UO gladly acknowledged the need for this and sent over an 85mm. We
sent both the UO 85mm and an 85mm RPP out for X-ray. Here are the
results.

1. There is a difference in the base lens design.

2. There are different number of elements in both lenses.

3. The mechanical design is different.

4. Each lens uses a different glass type for most of the elements.

5. The iris is in a different location on each lens.

I hope this puts the topic to rest.

Wow, that is cool. I had no idea so many glass elements were inside of a prime!

I was aware that people were saying they were both great lens designs but I hadn't heard that there was accusations they were the same design. In my opinion, the bokeh is different, at least from what I saw at NAB and what I have since seen from video that is emerging of the RPPs.

Still impressive that you had them sent out anyway Jim.

The way I understand it, Unique Optics is only looking to make a limited amount of sets.

I had no doubt, and welcome back!!

Amazingly cool photo to see inside the lens.

Great. Appreciate the "transparency" in this matter. Cool x-ray.

I thought the Double Gauss Derivatives looked similar.

No fair, bringing incontrovertible FACTS into the argument!

I had to look up what "FUD" means.
I presume you mean the "Fear Uncertainty Doubt" sense.
Interestingly Wikipedia also lists "FUD" as a Mexican manufacturer of hot dogs, sausages and suchlike.
In that case FUD stands for: "Fino, Unico y Delicioso" (Refined, Unique & Delicious), but on the other hand... :angelsad2:
