  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just my own predictions here, but I think we still have a little while to go before Final Cut Studio 3 ships. More info here:

I hope I am wrong. What's your two cents?

Apple's big announcements are typically kept under heavy lock-and-key.

It seems these days apple only cares about there itoys and forgot about the pro apes

I think they have to wait for SL to be released, and maybe 1 month or so after SL shipping.

regardless of snow leopard's release I would imagine FCS3 should be backwards compatible. Many post facilities won't be able to just lift to SL due to other inhouse dev'd apps and the such. The smart thing would be to make sure FCS is "optimized" for SL but compatible with OSX 10.5.x.

Yea, ofc it is backwards compatible, but to showcase Grand Central it would be a great selling point to wait untill Snow Leopard release.

People seem to forget - WWDC is a developer conference. There might be a couple of small, off-topic announcements such as minor speed bumps but all big announcements will be developer-centric.

I don't think it is impossible for Pro Apps to be announced at a WWDC conference, as Apple made a lot of API/SDK improvements from FCP 5 > 6 so it makes sense for FCP 7 to be even more developer-friendly (hopefully significantly). However, with Snow Leopard AND iPhone 3.0 at the same show I doubt they would have room to cover anything else. Those two are huge topics that represent a significant portion of Apple's developer market - it makes sense to prioritize them first.

Remember that Apple gets a ton of coverage for even minor, trivial things so they do not need to rely on trade shows or specific events in order to get the word out.

I think it will be out just after SL. I hope SL comes out soon. We already are getting comfortable with CS4.....

Fcs3 & sl

Fcs3 & sl

There were big discussions over this prior to NAB09 - will it show up in Vegas?
Some of us think the best time for a FCS3 update is with Snow Leopard, to maximize compatibility, tech & speed.
Although possible, it does not make sense to break out a new major, much waited for, multiple pro app revision before the new system is in place, with all new technologies inside.
Still, CS4 is out there, so never say never...
We know it's a long time coming.
Actually, we are all playing prophets until the thing is actually out...

Well, after the FCPUG at NAB this year, I got the distinct consipracy theory that Adobe is going to take over. You see, the thing that was showed off quite a bit at the FCPUG meeting was how well Premiere and FCP play together now, even so much as dragging timelines from one to the other with no conflicts. Heck, even the interfaces looked exactly alike! Now, I haven't had much experience with this myself, maybe some of you can point to problems going between the two, however, it all seemed very suspicious to me how convenient things were. Furthering my suspicion is the experience my brother had when he had to play around with Premiere recently to get around some little effects issue, so he had to edit the clip a bit and he told me later that it was exactly like working in Final Cut Pro. Could you imagine? Just port over Motion and Color and FCP is fully assimilated.

Now, that's just my conspiracy theory and unless I'm proven right, I'm going to assume that Final Cut Studio 3 is imminent. However, my question is, "How could it get any better than it is?" Honestly, all Apple has to do is release a bunch of bug fixes and speed improvements. If they tossed in Logic Pro and Shake for free that'd be pretty cool for newcomers but, then again, that's not doing too much for current users. Snow Leopard will obviously help it take full advantage of multi-core processors, so it will naturally get faster. As far as Shake goes, Apple can't do too much now because there are already great solutions out there, like Nuke. Maybe if they had released the new version of Shake a year or two ago, then maybe it stood a chance. However, most can get by with After Effects these days as it has come a long way in a very short amount of time. What would be great is if Apple bought out somebody like Wondertouch or Redgiant Software and added those products and integrated them into the FCS system, then that would be a big leap forward in terms of functionality and use. Imagine having Instant HD's uprez capabilities and Magic Bullet's 24p conversion capabilities natively integrated into Final Cut Pro's import/export system. I know you can get the same with the plug-in as it is but this would be on the fly. Wondertouch is a no-brainer as it is practically the advanced version of Motion, minus the 3D capabilities. Merge the two and there you go, new version of Motion. But, at this point, neither of those are likely to happen.

I would imagine all that could be done is better support and optimization for 2K and 4K+ material, as well as 3D, of course, in some way. Blu ray is a must for DVD Studio Pro as well. It would be nice if they made Color as powerful as Scratch, Lustre, or any of those other ridiculously expensive DI solutions. Besides that, I can't think of anything else as FCS is a pretty powerful software suite as it is.

Cs4

Cs4

I do not think CS4 is taking over quite yet...
I am very happy Adobe is back in the game. Competition is great for this stuff.
Still, although having a "live link" between the CS4 applications, like in FCS2, it looks as if they still have a long way to go. Just look at the interface of Premiere - it does not look like FCP imho, it is much more cluttered.
One of the major reasons that keeps me using Apple software is the interface design, which in post, has been the best so far. After Effects has needed a interface overhaul since forever... the Motion interface is superior by far.
I believe the Red Cine interface is very good as well and should be developed.
As for Shake, we are still waiting for news... it has been a while!
FCS2 is very good software, but many things can be improved, not just speed & 4K playback...
We are all waiting for those improvements.

Now, that's just my conspiracy theory and unless I'm proven right, I'm going to assume that Final Cut Studio 3 is imminent. However, my question is, "How could it get any better than it is?"
Seriously? There are things ranging from basic (like playing a clip backwards in the timeline) to complex (like lackluster media management and poor multiuser & multi project organization) that need to be fixed in FCP and don't even get me started on all the headaches involved w/getting media into/out of Color.

What headaches exactly? You click send to Color and it goes to color, when your done you click render and then whatever step follows.

Here's a list just off the top of my head of what one needs to keep in mind when round tripping between FCP and Color. No freeze frames, no speed changes, no multiclips (including collapsed multiclips), no nests, no gfx, nothing 'generated' by FCP such as slugs, text or color mattes, limited codec support in Color, changes made in FCP's Motion tab do not always survive the round trip, problematic PAL support, problematic interlacing support, problematic support of some non-square pixel codecs, and no mixing of frame rates, frame sizes or codecs.

To top it all off neither program warns if you are sending over a timeline w/'illegal' elements in it. You'll just have problems working inside Color, problems rendering out from Color, or problems sending the XML back to FCP. You can be doomed from the start but not know it until the very end.

I use Color a lot and I love using the program. I just hate all the problems that I have to be on the look out for when sending timelines to/from the application.

I'm hoping Final Cut Server will evolve into Final Cut Media Manager since it seems to do some of that.

Adobe Bridge is similar and just as underused.

I think we're at a point where media capture and ingest could probably be better handled outside of Final Cut itself where it can be metatagged, organized and tracked.

That would make it easier to bring shots that have been processed inside Final Cut into Color.

Apple also needs to get rid of the 8bit RGB limitation.

I too hope that the next version of FCP is a ground up rewrite that shares the same 'core' database technology that FC Server has so the apps can integrate better. I'm in the early steps of adding FC Server to my company's workflow and the lack of integration between Pro and Server is disappointing as is the amount of time it takes to check items into and out of FC Server. I tested a typical FCP project file for a half-hour show I work on and it took nearly 7 minutes to check the project into FC Server and check it back out again.

I have been waiting for the FCP rewrite for the last 5 years. Final Cut Pro is so 2004. I think I could list 100 things that FCP has issues with or are late to the table with.

8 bit yuv limitation. Why not full RGB 10 bit or more.
Soundmixing in the timeline using the same tools and effects as in STP.
DPX import and playback. Export...
Background rendering.
More advanced export features.
Faster workflow when editing like in iMovie 09. Both workflow and GUI-wise.
More effects from Motion directly in FCP timeline. Why all this roundtripping?
Metadata support, for real...
4K support not just 4000 but 4096 pixels and beyond.
Content search for audio/video just like in Motrion/Logic/Soundtrack
Textgenerator taking advantage of OSX

Just some of the features I would like to see. Can list more if you like.

For DVD Studio
Bluray support in DVDSP.
A QuickTime/H264 packaging app just like DVDSP that can pack moviefiles, audio, menus and more for digital distribution. Not just for Bluray but for download, since Bluray is just a middleformat before we go full download/streaming in a few years.

I really think Apple has been hard at work for the next version of FCP, for the last 5 years. If you look back FCP hasn´t been really updated since version 3. Just some better functions and new formats. The workflow is the same, the GUI too. They bought shake, logic, Color and CinemaTools and it takes time to implement all that into a brand new software. Cinematools have been redone and will be intergrated into FCP. Logic is on its way of being upgraded for a full rewrite, maybe the next release. Some of shakes technology are now in both FCP and Motion. Color will be more integrated in FCP but i think they bought it and shipped it as Color just so they would have something to sell. Without Color the last upgrade of FCStudio would just have been minor.

So if you look at it this way: Motion and Soundtrack have so much new OSX technology that we will see in FCP. FCP will probably be a total rewrite using code from Motion and Soundtrack. Other technologies like Color and Shake are also being implemented. Metadata and exporting will be much better. Videoworkflow is changing everyday and FCP is not up for the digital distribution of the future in its current form. It still feels like os9...

I´m waiting for a new FCP everyday. Have been for the last 5 years. These are just a few thoughts.

I would take Adobe more seriously if it did not crash so much.
On the MAC - Final Cut Pro never crashes.
On the MAC I have tried Premiere Pro and even the latest versions are very crash prone.
Adobe Encore is still very clunky and buggy.
Photoshop & After Effects are the only Adobe apps I really use.
