  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nikon 14mm vs. Nikon 14-24 zoom?

Hey guys, I was looking at putting together a Nikon set based on the new zooms (14-24 and 24-70) that have come out but I got a notice from B&H photo about the 14mm prime coming back in stock and it got me thinking. For RED, I know that prime lenses would better serve the overall image quality and ease of use, but I can't shake the good value in the zooms, especially since both solutions can get 14mm wide shots.

Has anybody tested both lenses or knows of a review out there already? Can someone post comparison photos? Opinions?

I was looking at the 24-70 too. Again budget limitations. It is a sweet lens though.

I thought we've beaten this one to death!!

I thought we've beaten this one to death!!

It does cover the full frame.

Tokina is an APS format lens and does not cover full frame- by definition.

There are some clever mods people have done for adding ND to the 14-24 - not necessarily elegant, but they work -- some of them making use of Lee or Cokin filters.

Re Grant's comment, I thought the 14-24 covered FF, but maybe I'm mistaken -- but if it does you would have some leeway on the smaller DX sized Red sensor. And as been suggested the 12-24, although a stop slower and a bit more distortion on both ends, I think, has the screw-in filter advantage.

The 14-24 G lays a devastating smackdown on all other ultra-wide still lenses, including primes. Most reviewers have claimed that the 14-24 "seems to defy physics" with its awesomeness. It's an FF35 lens. You can gain manual iris control for this lens with a 16-9.net Nikon G>EOS adapter ($220 USD). This assumes that you have a Canon mount.

Regarding filters for the 14-24, I would be really interested in seeing some pictures of what that actually looks like in action. Are some of these clip-ons?

Tom's right about the FF35 and the Tokina just like OptiTek has said. What I meant is with the Red sensor right now the DX lenses cover it no problem.

I think the bottom line is if you are using either the Tokina or the Nikon you will be happy because it sounds like you are enough of a story teller that people will be watching whats going on rather then artifacts.

Hopefully, hmmmm, and I have all my fingers crossed, the Birger Nikon mount will be shipped by the end of summer.

As far as filters go I use the Arri MMB-1 Mattebox (15mm-Side load-2 stages-3rd round rotating- 4x5.65 trays-114 mm bellows), Formatt Filters, Chrosziel 104:77mm Step-down Ring, Arri Connecting Ring 114-105MM. The only thing I had to modify was the step-down rings. This is because the DX lens move out a bit when zooming.
