What will we be recording to?

I have been following all of Red's progress and eagerly awaiting the Scarlet but I am curious what on earth it will record to. I have been reading in the Red One forums about difficulty recording higher frame rates at higher resolutions in RC 36 on CF cards. So my question is what media are we going to be recording RC 42, 80 and 100 to? There is a fleeting mention of a ram "module" in the scarlet/epic info but will there be CF cards fast enough for this more robust redcode by the time these cameras come out? Judging by the 8GB-16GB evolution timeline, it seems like no.

Fast, reliable 128 GB solid state laptop hard drives can be had for less than $500. Red currently offers a similar (but “professional") solution for $4500.

Considering that Sony charges about $1000 for their 32 GB XDCAM cards, Panasonic $1500 for their 32 GB P2 cards, and RED currently charges $500 for their 16 GB cards, I don’t see any reason why RED will be the one to start offering reasonability priced flash media. Their camera will be better for less money, so they don't have to.

If they actually do launch a camera for less than $4000 that’s higher quality than $6000+ cameras, they’ll make their money back with proprietary flash media. And we’ll need tons of it to handle their codec.

Yes I have read the Scarlet will be compatible to the RedDrive. I will connect via a breakout module you can get a look at it on scarletuser.

But I have a suggestion and a question. Okay here goes it. I am gearing up for the realease of Scarlet. I have 2 raid ssd drive units that I will use for capture. I want to make sure that the Reddrives used for capture are pretty much the same types of setup. I guess I mostly want to know if the drives are formated a certain way, NTFS, FAT32, etc. in order to capture.

Can anyone help me with this question? In case anyone wants to know how I will connect the camera and the drive, there is a cable that has an eSATA end as well as a Reddrive connection attached as well. I just have to remember where I saw the cable.

Red Drives are FAT32 filesystem. The cable you are looking for is the R2E LEMO cable:

Thanks Dom. The FAT32 is mostly what I was looking for. I had seen the cable before. I honestly think $230 for a small cable is entirely way too expensive. Not out of my price range just that some one wants way too much for a simple cable. I paln on making one my self, but if push comes to shove I will purchase one of thiers if I really need one.

It's not cheap, but do understand that those LEMO connectors are very expensive. I would also imagine SATA cables are a bit of a nightmare to solder yourself, and also remember that your data (i.e. footage) will be worth a lot more than $230...

In reference to Scarlet and red drive, it looks like at least the S35 will work according to this pic:

And on the main epic_scarlet page it leads one to believe that both internal (perhaps meaning red Drive) and external, other formats for data recording will be available.

I think Jim said that it will have an internal CF slot, like current DSLRs.

in the pre-DSMC version of scarlet, there was 2 CF slots for a possible RAID setup for increase speed.
