I am no DP, but in an unexpected twist of events today I got to shoot with all the RPPs... and the 4k clips are stored below my hands as I type this!
I didn't expect this, and the way I felt as I drove down to Red made me think of those pictures of Beatle Mania where hordes of screaming fans screamed in pure delirium as they tried to jump over the cops holding them back. No speeding tickets though. Pheeew...
After projecting them side by side with S4's (!!!) Jarred said to grab whichever I wanted and go shoot with them. I left the 18-85mm and 300mm alone since both are out, the 300 for a very long time. I have footage from the 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, and 100mm.
I can't wait to hear what some of the more knowledgeable people here will have to say once they get to analyze the footage. That however will be only to better understand lenses as a whole. It is no longer necessary for me to even entertain the idea of shooting with anything else.
-------------------------------
My humble take on the lenses:
Again I am no DP, nor do I try to pretend to be, so take what I say with a grain of salt and lets see what the more experienced shooters say.
Everything people are saying is true, and then some! It makes no sense how five RPPs will cost as much as one Cooke S4's yet on the projector they SMOKE them. I don't mean that I don't like S4's, I like practically the rest of humanity find S4's so very pleasing. However... if what you want is CLEAN, then get yourself a set of these monsters, NOW! You'll be able to work with your post house to give you the look you want, then a different look next for your next project. Or work with your DP to bake it into the image with optical trickery. Or both. It simply escapes me how someone could say that getting the cleanest set wouldn't be the best possible investment. Especially when post is becoming so much more accessible and easy... :cough: Red Rocket :cough:
No Master Primes were available to compare, but take a look at the footage as I begin to appear on this thread and others, and tell me what YOU think. I am all ears.
Someone steal my flares? I can't find them! The coating is INSANE!!! I think I saw flares... ONCE, maybe twice, but I still haven't found them in the footage... I didn't test properly for them, but I did put the camera in several situations where it should have flares up like crazy. Looking straight into the sun, though overexposed, and straight into a reflection of the sun in the window of a car.
The all have very acceptable amounts of breathing. The 25mm and 35mm seem to have practically ZERO breathing, especially the 25mm.
F/1.9 surprised me in terms of being able to get very shallow DoF with the R1 sensor even with the 25mm. I didn't know I should have expected so much. There was heaps bokeh as I got closer to the subject and had a good 6-8 feet to the background.
Specular highlights at non-full wide apertures show the blades, yet they are very pleasing. Look at the rack focus which were all at ~f/3 and you'll see what I mean. None of that straight blade crap here.
The 100mm will make you quiver, quiver I tell you, and without even trying. But sorry, I skipped shooting the 85mm and 100mm other than for the rack focus because I didn't feel the need to even check them out... those babies look beyond marvelous... so I focused on the wides to see how something stuck to wider lengths would look when using the RPPs.

Focus racks, all at about f/3.0, ungraded, 1024 x 576, H.264's, out of Vegas 9:
25mm Rack Focus
35mm Rack Focus
50mm Rack Focus
85mm Rack Focus
100mm Rack Focus
A little camera-cart dolly with some objects at different depths, using the 25mm:
25mm Dolly
High contrast clip, showing flares and sunstars. Sorry but I overexposed it, so I
raised the Contrast by 40%:
25mm Flares Sun-Stars and High Contrast
Finally a little video shot mostly with the 25mm, some 35mm and maybe one shot
with the 50mm. The indoor shots on the 25mm wide open. All of the outside stuff
is slightly overexposed:
