Protective Cover for RED ONE "Camera Cozy"

sweeeet!

sweeeet!

What a brilliant idea!!!!
Please put me on your contact list.:)

I wasn't able to make it out to the RED bash, so I never got to see the 'cozy' in action, but I was wondering if you have an idea on prices?
In Winnipeg...we would need both.

Thanks for your interest! Ill put you on the list. We are almost complete with the final prototyes for the camera, EVF, and LCD as well as final beta testing feedback. Manufacturing is the next step and will be in the pipeline hopefully within a months time.

We do not want to take pre-orders but rather have the units ready to ship instead of having anyone wait. Pricing information will be announced soon as we are ready to announce the final product line for shipping. More info and pics are coming very soon!

Awesome!!

Great idea! I enjoyed meeting Eric and the Reduser party and checking out the cozy. Great product. Definately put me on the list- I could really use this for a shoot I have in Alaska in June ...

I regularly work way out in the raw elements (mountains, ocean, desert), so I'm frequently asked to torture beta products from several companies (ET, View Factor, etc.) and give them feedback.

Last month in Vegas, at the RED User Party, I checked out the Camera Cozy, and chatted with Mike Burton and Erik Espera at the Silverado Studios table. I happened to mention that I was leaving the next morning for a few weeks of adventure travel production in the high mountains, red rock country of Utah, and northern Arizona. They asked me if I would take one of the beta Cozy units and test it out. My answer was "Let's do it!", so off I went to punish the Cozy.

Once I put the Cozy on one of my RED cameras (RED #8), I just left it there for an entire two weeks of shooting at Grand Canyon, the Navajo Reservation, Colorado River, Lake Powell, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and the high mountains north of Zion (above Duck Creek, etc.).

The in-snow shooting in the high mountains (9,500') was in the morning, with temperatures around 28 degrees Fahrenheit. It was windy, so the chill factor lowered the real temperature further - plus there was at times blowing dust and snow blowing off from trees. The Cozy worked real well there - it protected the camera. I'd like to see the same type cover for the RED battery too.

Most of the red rock country shooting was at temperatures around 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit. The Cozy worked well there too, keeping dust and grime off from the camera.

I decided to see how the Cozy would work in hot weather, so one day when we were shooting on the Navajo Reservation near Lee's Ferry (Colorado River), the temperature hit 90 degrees - again no problems - the Cozy worked well. It protected the camera from the direct sunshine and blowing sand, without causing any overheating problems at all.

The Cozy I had is a beta unit. Based on my tests, I made some minor design modification suggestions to Mike and Erik. These included offering velcro straps on the top so Cozy can be quickly installed/removed from the camera (without removing the top handle), a bit larger opening on the back of the camera to better access the on/off switch, individual velcro flaps on the smart side of the camera clear cover, so that its easy to get the EFF, LCD, and audio cables in, and a few other minor modifications.

I've attached three pics of RED #8 in action with Cozy, with the camera setup and lensed for shooting mobile adventure travel, alternative sports, and wildlife.

The tripod is a Miller 55, with Miller Solo 1505 carbon fiber legs. The lens is a Nikon 50-300 f4.5 AIS zoom, mounted on an Underdahl Nikon mount. The shotgun mic is a Sennheiser ME66. The camera is also loaded with ET accessories, including V-plate, ARRI 15mm base, EVF mount, Shock Mount, Speedy Clamp, cheeseplate, and others. I'm also using a View Factor Origo, which I've had no problems whatsoever with. I use Origo cables regularly in 21/2', 10', and 30' lengths.

I like the concept of the Cozy. Those of us who regularly work with our REDs outside in the elements really need camera protection from cold, heat, dust, sand, salt air, etc. It seems to me that a custom camera cover made from from flexible wetsuit material is a good solution. I'll keep torturing the Camera Cozy - but so far I really like it.

I'm a lot more concerned about heat. We had to put ice packs on our REDs last year a lot of days shooting here in Kansas. Is there some way to get an ice pack on top?

There is a pocket that goes over the heat sync on the top side of the camera cozy to store hot packs, gel packs etc as well as another pocket on the CF (smart) side of the camera.

Well, then put me on the list. . .

Thanks.

Stephen
