  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tokina 11-16 + ET Mantis + EasyRig

Ken Rockwell reveals a little bonus to this lens: At 15mm with all filters and hoods taken off, it will cover a FF35 - and an S35 of course.

"Here's a secret: take off the filter and hood and and this Tokina 11-16mm works reasonably well as wide as 15mm, if you don't mind softer corners wide-open, on film and FX. Shoot in the Nikon D3's 5:4 mode and you're good as wide as 13mm! It also works fine on my F4 film camera: I tried it on Fuji Velvia 50!"

I'm sold. Thanks for sharing

Do you absolutely need the Doug redesign to work with this lens? I was thinking of setting aperture beforehand, then mounting, for the time being..

Some friends of mine have used small pieces of sponge to block the aperture where they wanted it (usually wide open) so you can do it.

Funny you should ask. I've had difficulty mounting and unmounting the lens from Doug's mount and getting the Iris lever to align with the screw. At some point, I turned the lens to remove it and damaged the lever so it doesn't spring back into position as it's supposed to. This spring action is what requires Doug's modification (otherwise the Iris is always closed to 16.) So, with my currently damaged lens, I can manually set the Iris before mounting the lens and it stays put. Not the most convenient, but I haven't dared call a lens shop to get a quote on fixing it. (I do intend to unscrew the rear mount of the lens and peak inside to see if it's something I can easily fix myself... if that's the case, it means you could easily "un-fix" this spring action and make use of one of these lenses without Doug's mod.)

I wasn't aware of this issue at all. Let us know if you go ahead and mod it yourself, pictures would be great of course. Have you thought about driving up to Duclos and showing it to him?

I take it all back. I bought the Tokina. There is no way to properly de-spring the iris or to even use it in that kind of fashion. Doug's DX mounted is a must have for this situation. I was a little against having to plunk down another $320 on the mount mod, but I understand now why that its the only choice to properly use the Tokina or any other G/DX lens.

You must be happy to own something hand-holdable after your time with the 20-100mm... I've been holding off on using the nikon mount and getting the underdahl mod, though this lens would be the biggest push to do so. I love quick and dirty!

What focal length were you on for your shot? Is that all the way wide?

On a side note, I very much like the street signs... "I'll meet you at the corner of Alluring and Fascinating."

So I take it this is not the Duclos Tokina?

Alexis, could you talk about using the Mantis with your Easyrig? It seems overkill, that if you have the Easyrig that you dont really need a Mantis (though I've been lusting after the Mantis for some time).

I know that Mantis+Easyrig is what they use here in Oregon for Leverage, but that's when they're rocking an enormous Red with Optimo, etc.

Footage finished downloading...very nice! It's cool how "3d" it feels when you're out at a focal length this wide, and what a long DOF!

Am I the only one who doesn't like the EasyRig? I just didn't care for it when I played with it last year. I guess that's because if I want to support the camera out in front of me, I would prefer a stabilizer arm -- ActionCam, Steadicam, etc.. Or if I'm going to support the camera on my shoulder, then I don't need it. Seems overkill if used with the Mantis, once the weight is loaded to your body, either your hips or shoulders, it seems kinda pointless to try and pile on more gear to redistribute it.

Shawn, if I'm seeing that image right (Optimo 12X w/ mattebox), that's just a complete "WTF?" right there.

I've done plenty of handheld with the RED One and the Cooke 18-100 mounted up. Yes, that's a "WTF" moment every time I do it. But sometimes that's all time or budget allow for. It's possible to balance it out though and the Mantis makes it workable. That Optimo 12X weighs about 9lbs more, though and then if they're putting a mattebox on the front of it... well... I suppose the EasyRig would be handy to hold up the front of that rig, but damn. Really... Why?
