  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Tokina 11-16mm F/2.8 DX quick&dirty handheld test

Why do I get the impression that exposure goes down a tad when it's on full wide?

Is it a lens characteristic?

Or perhaps it's just a reveal of a vignetted area?

Sanjin's got a funky mount where you control the iris by twisting the lens in the mount. Twist with enthusiasm and ....

4k = 4k resolution ! Not dollars. Initial target price was to be "should be below $3,250." I'll talk with Matthew and Paul tomorrow and see what they think it can be done for.

The sample I converted had really good resolution, @2.8 it was easily doing 200lp/mm - the top scale of the reticle. Quite a bit more than the Red can put to use.

Lol, yeah. I see the original statement was "should be below $3,250. It could go down substantially with larger quantities", hopefully those larger quantities are looking good and we'll get substantially less as predicted!

I'm looking forward to seeing this lens at the Reduser party

I wouldn't count on a quantity discount. The lens will be reasonably priced from the get-go.
Another opportunity for me to use my favorite automotive analogy..
Quantity discounts would be applied to the mass produced, sloppy Honda of optics..
I like to think of our work as more of the Pagani or Koenigsegg of optics.
Although... Our lens will still cost thousands less (tens of thousands in some cases) than the alternative.
That was a bad example...

Think of it this way: Tokina makes thousands of these little buggers.
The sheer quantity of lenses they make allows them to keep the price of this lens down.
Hence, the enduser price is reduced accordingly. The quantity discount is already applied :)

More about my Tokina 11-16mm solution:

"For those who find the concept of rotating the lens in its adaptor too unconenventional,
the Lever-Operated version locks the lens and adaptor into fixed positions and actuates the diaphragm via
a control ring installed inside the adaptor. A control switch mounted on the outside perimeter of the adaptor
permits any aperture to be selected."

Chromatic aberration ?

Chromatic aberration ?

hey Sanjin

how do you find the chromatic aberration of the Tokina ?
I'm using the Birger mount and I'm getting some pretty wicked purple fringing... I'm wondering if perhaps my collimation of the mount has anything to do with this and would love to know if you have it too, I can't see much in the vids you posted.

cheers../daniel

Sanjin or anyone with an opinion,

I have the Birger mount and was planning to buy this lens. But now, I have a friend who is offering me a great deal on a Canon 10-22.

If you could only buy one: the Tokina 11-16 or the Canon 10-22, which would it be?

Here there is an example at almost the same location (don't take me for some unsharpness of Tokina because of the rushing at public location I couldn't nail it)

Tokina 11-16mm @ 11mm vs Canon 10-22mm @10mm>>>

After all I would prefer Tokina 11-16mm just because of less"pincushion" optical distortion...

hi sanjin,
can you tell me the order in which you assembled the shots in your link?

best wishes,
martin

Wow! Thank you so much! If you think they're every bit as sharp, with less pincushion, and lower light (2.8 vs 3.5-4.5)--I think I'm sold.

So you feel that, all things considered, if you had really shot them on the same day, with same lighting and aperature we'd be comparing mostly pin-cushion and distortion, but the color reproduction and sharpness would be similar if not indistinguishable?

Again, thank you so much--you really are a wonderful resource to all of us!
