  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RPPs... 4K vs. 5K

That's it! The perfect compromise!

Hey guys,

I love this idea. I also really like the name 'X35'. However, does anyone else think that it sounds like it could be confused with the term 'S35', when spoken? Both X and S have an 'S' sound in them.

Phonetically they are 'eks35' and 'es35'.

Not to be boring or anything though.. :)

People don't say esss 35, they say Super 35, so no phonetic mix up with ex 35, I think.

I think Jannardvision and REDvision make too much sense. Mysterium is better. X35 is techno crazy and very distinctive.

You are of course correct, but people say "ess35' as an abreviation over here all the time.. must be something about the water circling down the wrong way in the sink or something :)

In my opinion, it should not be considered a new format.

Attributing a single label to the 30x15mm 5K DSMC sensor is practically meaningless when people won't be shooting footage using those dimensions; rather, most people will shoot using one of the standard aspect ratios that will be available as crops from the sensor's active pixel array, each of which having its own (smaller) dimensions and lens coverage requirements.

I'm convinced that image circles are the way to go -- I'll post a chart tomorrow with a fairly comprehensive estimate of Scarlet and Epic image circles, hopefully it'll explain why I think a single label is redundant.
Agree a hundred billion percent. That's what I've been trying to convey, it just seems to get lost in translation when I say it...

A concrete answer from RED of just how much of the chip gets used in the main aspect ratios would be extremely helpful right now.

funny thread... I just took a call from someone on a "big" feature wanting to know if there was a Vistavision camera in Oz... they really didn't know what they were asking for, but I did....

oh, and I don't think there is... (?)

Why not skip S35 altogether and put the money on Monstro FF35? It seems to me that since S35 is covered by the Epic FF35, you could just do away with the Epic version of the S35 and just keep it as a Scarlet Brain/Red One upgrade. I understand hedging One's position in the market, but is this a necessary option going forward? Forgive me, Jim, if I sound like I'm presuming to know how you run your business, but I don't see the advantage to the Epic S35 unless it is a Monstro Sensor and it outperforms the FF35 in frame rate. My fear would be the FF35 would eat into the S35 category if it came out too soon after Epic S35. If the Monstro roll out came much later due to development progress, I could see it, but I would expect the price to drop on the S35 substantially after the Epic FF35 release. The PDF leads one to believe these brains will all be in-stock items carried in inventory, and I see the Epic Monstro FF35 undercutting demand for Epic Mysterium X S35. Unless Monstro will replace it in the line-up.

If this format would/should/might be used by other camera making companies, then Red should be omitted from the name not to scare them away. Since it is a pure digital format I would suggest names like DigiRama or PixelRama or PixelVision or PixelScope or, one of my favorites, TrueScope ...

If not, then Red word (or its product names) just shouldn't be omitted, so something like ScarletRama, RediculousVision, ...

Because I want one :sifone:

Besides that, Mysterium-X X35 JannardScope format has higher density of pixels and is perfectly suited to the majority of PL lenses available and majority of users want just that and no more. Larger sensor is more expensive too. I can see massive demand of this format. FF35 format may or may not prove popular. Who knows? I intend to get FF35 Scarlet, but as a second/specialty camera only. The bread & butter will be S35 and X35 work.

Lets try to use the phrase "acts like" instead of "is". A 50mm is always a 50mm, no matter what the sensor size. A 50mm can "act like" a 40mm on an X35 size sensor.

Jim

Thank you! I've been telling people this for years.
I made signs with a diagram and posted them all over various rental houses in LA to make it very clear.

How about 58mm? (or whatever the metric dimension is of the sensor)

If not, I cast my vote for Ultra35 as they seem to slap an x on everything these days...

Keep in mind that the wider Mysterium-X sensor will yield a wider relative field of view for any given lens. A 50mm at 4K will act like a 40mm lens at 5K... and so on.

Jim

A 50 mm is only a 50 mm on FF35, at least by historical standards. Because of the crop factor, a 50 mm ACTS LIKE a 70mm in 4K (S35), and will act like a 60mm in 5k (now called X35, I gather)

X35 works for me, though it's funny to perpetuate the 35mm nomenclature when we no longer need sprocket holes, which are part of the original 35mm measurement.

The best part is that no matter what happens or how many "K" worth of pixels we cram onto a sensor in the future, the physical size of the lens coverage area doesn't change - so this list is good forever.

As cool or fun as it is to start making up terms like "x35," I really employ RED to use an approach like this that is much more functional and straightforward. Thanks.

Unfortunately the lens manufacturers will claim a bigger circle than can actually be used, so we really need a reliable source like SMPTE to govern such "new" standards.

The great thing is we trust RED because they are interacting with us and their motives seem pure - to deliver the best camera that they too would want to use everyday.

I like x35 because it communicates in a language that is already in wide use, but at the same time the new language of circle size/resolution should be standardized.

Viva la x35 or rx35 as the doctor is in and writing prescriptions for red hots. Ex35 and S35 sound too similar, so I vote rx35 or r35 or red35.
