hello, my RED is its way right now and i'm trying to finalize my plans for cases. it will be traveling quite a bit and a decent amount of that travel will be international. I ordered a pelican 1560 case that i'm hoping to fit the essentials in so that i can carry it on with me. i was traveling in the middle east with an f900 a while back and BA lost 2 of our bags. luckily i had the camera, lens, a battery, and 2 tapes in a kata carryon, so i was able to make do until the bags caught back up to us. after that experience and seeing how bad i'd have been bitten, i really want to find a carry on solution for the RED. anyone using the 1560 case or anything similar? i want to get the body, lcd, charger/1-2 batts, nikon mount and a 18-70mm slr lens (backup in case my red lens doesn't make it) in the main case. my other carryon has a 17" MBP, 4tb drobo, card reader, drives, and a mic. i have 2 other cases for the full rig: 1 for the red 18-85 and a couple other nikons, another for MB, FF, 4 batts, evf, audio gear and some other non-essential acc. there's also a tripod tube in the mix. any suggestions for splitting the gear up differently or other case options? thanks!

thanks for that info. i don't know how i missed that thread. i'm also wondering if there's a way to harden the pelican pick-n-pluck foam after its configured. i have a few 3m adhesive and coating products, but i'm a little worried about it rubbing off on the gear even after its cured. anyone had any luck with this? my other cases w/ pick-n-pluck haven't held up very well over time and i can't spend a whole ton on custom foam.

The 1560 is marginally over the allowance. You might get away with it, you might not. I'd suggest a backpack like the new Kata BP-502. It's much easier to get through an airport and on and off a plane with a backpack rather than a case and it doesn't shout "rob me" quite so loud.

Keep hand carrying the case. We have ours in a padded soft bag so we always have camera, zoom lens and batteries with us. I wouldn't take a chance on the big Pelican, leave that in the hold and use it during production. Bags always get lost sooner or later and sometimes they never come back...

I also have the camera in the PortaBrace smuggler. meets carryone requirements and well
padded with a little additional foam.

This is what I have used for carrying on the Body: http://www.filmtools.com/pe15aicacawi.html.

It sounds like you could fit almost all you need in there, probably minus the Charger(s). I had the Body, EVF, 5.6 LCD, 18" rods, a drive and some other small things in there. But it is perfect carry-on size.

It also sounds like you could fit all your other stuff into a big 1650 Pelican. It gets heavy when you really load it up, but it has wheels and if you have an extra hand its no problem.

Safe travels.

You didn't say what type of batteries you're using. If they are lithium ion, there's new very strict rules from the FAA governing this type of battery chemistry. As of January 1, 2009, lithium ion batteries over 100Wh are classified as Class 9 Dangerous Goods. RED BRICK batteries are 140Wh and therefore fall into this category. From what I understand, we are allowed to CARRY-ON only 2 such batteries. Checking-in these batteries into cargo is strictly forbidden. You don't want to discover at the airport that you have to leave behind $2,000 worth of batteries. Follow the links in this thread:
