Any technical reason why this el-cheapo TV wouldn't work as a crane/director's/focus puller's monitor?

Dynex 15" 720P Monitor

It has an HDMI input, VESA mounting, and 1366 x 768 resolution. Obviously no good for color, but as a focusing tool might it be a good cheap solution?

From what I can gather, the HDMI out signal from the RED ONE is either not standard or not supported by many monitors. I spoke to several vendors at NAB that gave me that information based upon their own tests with their own HDMI monitors. In particular, my IKAN HDMI monitor will work fine with every other device including my Canon 5D Mark II by will not display the HDMI signal from the RED. IKAN is working on a firmware solution but as of now, it doesn't work. However, there have been different experiences with different builds. If this monitor does display the RED HDMI out signal, let us know.

NOTE that this monitor is only 250 NIT (250 cd/m²) compared to 400-600 NIT for many field monitors and 1000 NIT for some of the new monitors coming out in the next few months. Granted, those are much more expensive but it will be tough to view this monitor in a brightly lit studio and impossible to view outdoors.

Also, how are you planning to power the unit?

Humm,

The main reason a "720p HDMI" monitor won't work with a RED ONE is

a) the PREVIEW is set to DVI (MENUS) so the frame size is 1280 x 848.

b) the connection is HDMI to HDMI and the displays trips up over HDMI handshaking.

In the latter case try Build 18 v3.6.4. In the former case try 720p (VIDEO)

In either case, the best value for size / clarity / performance is still a RED-LCD.

Hi Stuart:

I have Preview set to 720p and am using Build 18 v3.6.0 I believe. Would rolling back to 18-3.4.6 or Build 17 make a difference? I have tested two of IKAN's monitors and spoke to other monitor manufacturers at NAB that also said they were having trouble getting their monitors to work with the Red because the HDMI signal coming out of the RED is non-standard. I'm not saying they are right, and certainly there could be another explanation. Just passing along what I know and what I've personally seen. Both IKAN monitors work just fine with the Canon 5DMII.

Must be tired. Meant to say Build 18 V 3.6.4.

The RED ONE actually supplies a DVI signal, but uses an HDMI connector as it is much smaller, and electrically the two are identical.

The problem may therefore relate to HDMI protocol handshaking..

Hi Stuart

any plans to add the full menu out from the HDMI?
There are many situation where this features could be really useful (even if you have the red LCD attached...)

Thanks

Is there any difference between 18 V. 3.6.0 and 3.6.4 when it comes to HDMI protocol handshaking? If so, I'll try upgrading and report back.
