Sometimes we look at the people selling us our gear and figure they must be the heroes who "make the deals" for us day in and day out.
This is true a lot of the time, guys like Steve and Mitch over at Able do us a great service, but there are some guys we don't normally meet who do more for us than many of you are aware.
One of these people is a guy by the name of Eric Johnston. He's the product manager for camera accessories over at ARRI.
It was Eric that gave birth to that wonderful Group Buy for the MB-20 so long ago, and he's the reason it's starting up again today. I only ran with the concept after he picked up the phone and convinced me that ARRI was very interested. Trust me, without Eric, these deals would NEVER have existed.
It was Eric who designed a ground glass especially for the RED camera to use in ARRI'S new Director's Viewfinder.
Eric works hard, and he travels a LOT, this keeps him off the boards himself. And that's tough because in this industry if you don't stand up and toot your own horn every now and again, someone else may toot it for you and call it their song!
So I thought I would take a moment and let all of you know, that RED has a friend in ARRI, and his name is Eric Johnston. And while he may not reply on these boards, there are people who can do it for him. Steve, or Mitch over at Able, and yes, sometimes even me.
I got to spend more time with him this NAB than I have all other times combined, I also got to know him beyond the "professional face" he puts on for most people. It was then I learned why he takes such an interest in all of us.
Just like Jim, Jarred, and all of us.... Eric LOVES to shoot. He loves the film industry and shares the same passion for it that so many of us do, he's excited about all this, and he see the RED as a way to bring more customers to ARRI. After all, with 90 years in this industry, a lot of us tend to use ARRI as an adjective more than a name. "Well I know it's a good piece of equipment, but is it "ARRI quality"?
So if you have ideas, or suggestions, or just want to say "thanks". Type something. He may not respond, but like the guardian angel of film accessories, he's always watching!
Letting everyone know that people like Eric keep you loyal to ARRI and what they make goes a long way to seeing other cool things in the future. Not only that, it's the right thing to do.
My two cents...
