  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can anyone recommend the best Director's Viewfinder for the RED?

Arri introduced a new compact Director's Viewfinder at NAB, as well as a groundglass specifically marked for RED 4K with 2:1 & 16:9 framelines. The unit uses standard interchangeable Arri 435 groundglasses so you can choose to have custom ones made as well.

We had them in our booth at NAB and they're available for purchase now (shipping in two weeks). Our show special price was $5000 including the RED groundglass. Don't know if that deal still stands but you can contact us and ask.

I'm not familiar with that unit so I can't comment on it. The Arri device is similar in size and is built to Arri quality standards. If you look at the cost of buying a groundglass then I think you'll find that these are similarly priced.

I here what you're saying Mitch and that's the reason why I've decided not to get any. I will use the EPIC and/or Scarlet being in DSMC mode as a viewfinder, when doing recce's. If I find I need an extra I will get one extra Scarlet instead.

Fair enough. Just remember that this requires no batteries and as a hunk of glass rather than electronic with a hunk of glass behind it, the viewfinder has to be the lighter alternative. But ya can't shoot with it ...

I know this isn't exactly what is being asked about, but personally I take my Canon 40D (APS-C size sensor, roughly same physical size as Red's) with my EF photo lenses and take stills of the angles I like. Then the built in lens metadata tells me exactly what I used to get the shot, which I could also see when I was taking it by setting the appropriate focal length on my zoom, or using a prime.

These focal lengths are basically identical to what you will use when shooting motion later with the Red, and with the Birger mount I have the added benefit of literally using the same lens and F-stop for my moving shot, as I did my still recce shot!

It's another option, anyway, and options are good :)

Best viewfinder for the RED?

Nikon D70 - $300 for the body used (Nearly identical sensor size to the R1 Mysterium)
Nikon 18-200mm lens - $400 used
Katz Eye Optics Multi format ground glass - $100

You get the FOV/DOF of a RED in addition to a still photo function, not bad for something so small that costs much less than an Arri viewfinder and doesn't make everything look like *** like a Mark Vb.
