If you zoom into the pic in the upper right of the image you'll notice that the shroud design is almost the same. Viewing window on the dumb side front of the focus barrel for witness marks, Witness mark window towards the rear on the operators side (that window has been removed in this shot and is on the table). Very similar grouping of shrouds.

Oh ya 32mm image circle, and 110 front.

Any commonality, if there is any at all, is via the use of the same 3rd party designer and consultents. There are only so many ways to skin a cat and people often have their own 'style' in such things.

Proof is in the 'tasting' and it'll be interesting to see how they stack up against each other in the SALT tests. Cheers on the tip.

Well I just found something that gives me a decent level of confidence these are the same lenses at least to a certain degree. It's a good thing I should say.

So, what is that UO lenses would offer that RPPs won't? Can anyone ask them at the booth?

UO has a very nice set of primes that they displayed at NAB. Theirs are T1.9... the RPPs are T1.8. They are NOT the same designs or glass. Peter from UO is welcome to post here and confirm. Speculation is a wonderful thing until someone actually believes it as fact.

Maybe they aren't the same but both were developed by Hyperion...
Different lenses, same breed. A little bird told me that...

I haven't been to the RedUser party due to lack of time but had chance to handle the Q ones and, I have to say, they look and feel fantastic, even a B4 guy like me, unskilled to PL lenses evaluation, could get the feeling.

Well there you go.. Jim said it.
I wouldn't question Jim...

..but we want conspiracies and outright lies!! We're humans..

I'm gunna miss George Bush Jnr, bless his lying little conspiracy filled socks .. like a hand grenade placed lovingly in my ears :violent:

I was under the impression as people from RED keep stating that all their optics are now designed in house and then made in Japan ???

The uniQoptics lenses were one of the suprises in the PL uprising. They are impressive looking and said they will take part in SALT.
I spoke with their creator, Kenji (T-stop) Suematsu. I knew nothing about him but he is well known in Hollywood. When I was visiting Luma Tech (Lomo) at the Hilton later that day with Evin Grant. We mentioned UniQoptics new lenses. They were not aware of the new lens set put were aware (without our prompting) that Suematsu must have been the developer. They were well aware of his history. Turns out he won a technical academy award for his optic work. The len set should be a sound entry in the PL wars.

That being said, I'm not sure they can compete with Red. Other than the 18mm in the set I see no advantage. Having seen the Reds on a projector, I don't see them matching or exceeding the sharpness of the red set. They are slightly slower and cost more. Their delivery date is also in question.

After leaving the projection booth at the Red event I spoke with Jared and Jim. "very impressive demo" . Jim replied " it is what it is". In other works, It can't tell you everything about the lens but it shows how incredibly sharp they are from corner to corner. Up against a Cooke S4 and Ziese MP, they more than held their own, they ruled.

Salt should be interesting!

I will be home tomorrow and upload some shots of the lens set. Can't get them off my 5D.

Good bye from Vegas.

When I was about twenty or so years of age ( in the sixties) I worked with Kenji Suamatso at F&b Ceco Rentals in Hollywood, Ca. in the rental devision. He taught me a lot about zoom lens repair. Among other stuff.

There has been some speculation about uniQoptics and RED being the same lenses, or sharing the same designs or glass. This is simply not true. None of it.

Speculation like this is not fair to either company. uniQoptics lenses stand on their own as do the RED lenses.
