Hi there Sachtler - connoisseurs (and others!),

I just got a nice and sturdy Sachtler Video 25 to carry my RED - and to go with it I have ordered the Arri 19mm baseplate (made by Element Technica as far as I understand) from the RED store. Looking at the equation I am asking myself what the missing link is - IF - in fact, there is one at all...?

From what I can see off the pictures, I fear there is a part missing, (an angled cheeseplate of sorts?) but I hope I am wrong - in which case I'd be good to go!

Thoughts from anybody with a similar setup would be greatly appreciated.

One extra needed part would be a silly spoiler of finally starting filming spring...!

Sincerely,

Fredrik

Thanks a lot Cail!,

I was on ET's homepage just before your answer and figured it had to be something like that, but your reply makes me sure now - so thank you very much indeed!

I couldn't really understand why there wasn't a dovetail like that in the RED store...sort of linked to the arri 19mm - to go with... so I suppose that was what was confusing me.. I dont really understand why RED doesn't sell it?

(But I suppose there is a whole lot of ways to attach cameras to different brands of tripods and lack of one industry - standard - too many solutions - I guess...?)

One more question though: attaching the dovetail to the Video25 head?

Do you unscrew everything that is there from before -the original quick release and lock-plate - and bolt the new dovetail in the track where all this was with several screws, so the Arri 19mm baseplate can slide into the dovetail and be locked with its own quick-release mechanism...?

Just what I'd be guessing...

Thanks again for helping me finding out what to order,

Fredrik

be sure you get a dovetail with screw holes for the sachtler video 25 plate. old dovetailes have greater distances between their holes.

martin

Thanks Martin and Hans !

Hans: I still don't understand completely the point of using the Sachtler quick - plate when there is a quick - release on the Arri 19mm base itself -as far as I can see...on the side?

Why not use this instead?

Seems having the one screw from the Sachtlers quickplate holding the whole (16 - 20 kg) camera seems a little...uhm...weak?
- Or is one screw perhaps enough?

Martin: thanks for you dovetail - advice. Do you by any chance know which dovetail that fits and which ones that don't? Brands?

I thought of getting one from Element Technica...must admit though - it's not exactly cheap for what looks like a metalplate with wholes in it

(435 dollar for this - the cheapest: http://www.elementtechnica.com/products/view.php?p=8)

- It says it fits the Sachtler Cine 30 - will it fit Video25 too...?

Sincerely,

Fredrik

hi fredrik,

i have an arri dovetail which is not the most modern one ;-)
it has only three mounting screw holes which do no fit for the sachtler 25 quickplate. the sachtler 25 quickplate is to short for that purpose. you could only use one screw then - which i agree is not stable enough.

hope that helps - regards,
martin

Guten abend Martin!

Helped greatly.

Merci beaucoup.

Hi Fredrik, it is a bit odd that Red doesn't sell the matching dovetail, but I think it's that ET made an exclusive deal with Red on the Arri-style baseplate and they hadn't yet developed their own dovetail line at the time -- and the Arri-style baseplate was Red's way to accommodate people who already owned Arri dovetails.

All dovetails are expensive in a sense, for what they are -- but they are not a mass produced item, have to be machined very precisely -- on the up side, they should last a lifetime.

The ET dovetails are as nice as they get, I feel. I would spring for a longer one. Very helpful in balancing. Money well spent looking long term.

Hi Rod,

Just talked to Element Technika on the phone, and they were saying exactly the same as you - he suggested a 12 inch. It would be sufficient for balancing also longer lenses.

Thanks,

Fredrik
